So about 6 years ago, I figured it might be fun to pick up a paintbrush again. As a kid, I loved to draw and paint and mess with art stuff, but soon, my younger brother, who is a really gifted artist was producing work and getting a lot of attention, so you know, why bother? Something took all the joy out of drawing and painting for me and I was almost 50 before I tried it again.

Ours was and is a great place to come for friendly feedback, so I posted a few pix of paintings I'd made. I saw that Tr ig  had commented on one of them and was a bit apprehensive about reading the comment. The man didn't know the meaning of the word "filter". Well, at least I'd get honest critique. The comment read: "You got skillz" and it made my day.

I rediscovered the joy--of being creative with paint, of just losing myself for a few hours, of honing my "skillz". When I paint and I'm trying something new or tricky, I think of Steve.

This one is a work in progress. Inspired by an old photo of Philly in the 80's, posted by someone on FB, I'm not a plagiarist, so I'm adding my own, unexpected elements. If you remember Dr. Seuss's "To Think that I Saw That on Mulberry Street", you'll be halfway there. Dragons are involved.

The very first time I heard the name Django Reinhardt was in Woody Allen's 2000 movie "Sweet & Lowdown" & just loved it.

If you love Django, check out Youtube for the Rosenberg Trio--they are the keepers of the flame.

Cool! Painting is the best. Wait. No. Drawing is the best!

I am more than seventy hours into a drawing that's barely half finished. I need to speed up. In the morning, I do warm up drawings in my sketchbook, and for the past few weeks, it's been of a small change purse my mom used to carry her subway tokens in as young girl. I've been using a brush pen, and love how fast. In fifteen minutes, it's done!

skillz. he was so funny. Like painting is graffiti and skillz is your tag :)

Love Django and "Gypsy Jazz" and agree with tr ig.

Also, whether or not you got skilz, the fact that time stops when you're painting is the important thing.
