Check out this repulsive thing I spotted right next to the sidewalk.

That, my friends, is a dead Armadillo.  Lying suspiciously close to where I spotted that ghastly buzzard-thing the other day.

My husband is so patient with me.  I actually stopped the car in the middle of traffic and jumped out to get this pic, all the while thinking of you guys.  I feel like a war zone journalist, risking my life for the shot.

Ready for the stew pot.

Along with the Texas Longhorn steer and the Mexican free-tailed bat, the Nine-banded armadillo is one of the three officially designated State Mammals of Texas.  Not sure how the designation affects the disposal of roadkill.

Did you know the fun fact that the armadillo is the only other animals besides humans to host the leprosy?  You may have been risking your life for the shot more then you realize.

Let me know if body parts start falling off, okay? (and pictures of that happening would be cool!)

Agreed, Safe Bet's!!!!!  I drive by every day and watch it turning blacker and blacker.  That fascinates me.  Why is it turning black?  Exoskeleton?

I love that little nugget of trivia about leprosy.

JMac....that is ANOTHER thing I have been pondering.  The carcass is very near the gate guard, an actual human, who could easily report it and have it removed.  In fact, I'm pretty sure he could have spotted me stopping my car and jumping out to snap the pic.  "Twere it me sitting in the guard shack, I would have gone out to see what the fuss was all about.  A normal guard would call pest control or whatever to have him/her removed.  "Twere I the guard, I would have watched it daily and taken time lapse photos.

Anyone ever read Stiff:  The Curious LIves of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach.  So cool.

I am going to politely ask all y'all NOT to comment on the fact that I live in a neighborhood with a guarded gate.  I am already carrying plenty of white, overprivileged guilt.

We had no way of knowing the gated community was yours. If you take down your last comment and this one, I won't say anything. And I doubt anyone feels either comfortable enough with you yet or (as is theoretically possible) antagonistic enough to comment.

Not to mention you may not be alone.

Jebus, pompous much, KB???

Actually, Safe Bet's (man, you are so sweet....defending me and all...I just KNEW you were a sweatheart), I need to give props to KB for noticing that, yes, indeed, it is not clear that it is MY gated community.  Can I think about removing the post for a bit?

The truth is I am staining my deck and too lazy to take care of it right now.  :)

I don't stain my deck because I always put down a tarp.  It cleans up in a jiffy when I eviscerate people there.
