July 6 2015 A.D. - Cosmic Reflections of this past 239th "Independence Day"!

How ‘bout that Holiday (rimshot!)!

Why the signing matters: only rock-solid stone would be a stronger (known) medium for this purpose than mere paper.

By the affixing of one's signature, the mere paper signifies guarantee in perpetuity of…

We’ve got gay marriage, now what?

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

It’s official. A majority of the Supremes proclaimed that the U.S. Constitution guarantees the right to same-sex marriage in all states. It is indeed an historic occasion. The love that dare not speak its name is proving these days that it will never be silent again.

This is not something I could've foreseen. When I came out, gay sex was illegal and gay men were routinely subjected to electro shock therapy to try and make them straight. Gay bars…

What if? If only...

There is a certain Texan here on Our Salon who regularly posts his own twisted version of current events with provocative language about conspiracy and race and customized "facts" which clearly invite comments and conflict.  This isn't Trollish behavior in the traditional internet ethic of creative chaos, but much more in the boorish pontification of bigoted and paranoid agit-prop commentary found in specialized chat rooms.

Never having been…

The shame and the pride of it all

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

As an organizer of the first pride march in Philadelphia in 1972, I find it difficult to be proud of what passes for pride in the new millennium. It's not that I'm unwilling to change with the times. I just can't believe what's become of those defiant marches we used to stage on the last Sunday of June to commemorate a riot at a bar…

Making sense of that which makes no sense

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

Nothing lasts forever. That may not be an original thought, but how often do we really think about it? We go about our busy lives, our routines, day after day, year after year, as if they will never end.

They do. At some point. Sometimes when we least expect it. A sudden heart attack. An accident. It’s all over in the blink of an eye. Or we linger on for months, years, suffering and yet so many times clinging to that desperate hope that we’ll…

My recent absence due to hospitalization bleh, bleh, bleh!

Okay this is where I've been the last few weeks and  more or less what I've been up to and through for that matter.Image result for hospitalization   About a month ago I began feeling listless, had no appetite, and was sleeping about 2 hours of every day.

I got very weak after a couple of weeks of this and you have to understand that my daily routine includes jacking myself into the air with a sling and chain hoist upon arising and after pulling myself down the hall via a monorail on the ceiling, dropping…

Zoe The Happy Dog (RIP) OS 02.24.14

My beloved Zoe,

Your Daddy Tim went back to San Francisco last night. This was the first night in more than one year that I have spent alone. Your bed is still on the floor beside mine. I’m not ready to face the cold empty wood that rests beneath it. On my way to bed I need to take a moment to lie beside your spirit, to tell you that Daddy…

Kent State 45 years later

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

The slaughter of four students at Kent State 45 years ago made me realize that I could never be proud to be American. Not that I was.

I grew up with images on our small-screened black and white television, that my aunt bought at a discount at GE where she worked on an assembly line, of black children blown up in churches and civil rights marchers hosed down and beaten by vicious cops in the South. I learned from the news that all men and women…
