Zoey's Hall

It struck me how the sight of her entering my darkened bedroom, the penumbra of light around her body from the lamp outside, could awaken the quickening sensation in my body of a young man. Memories mix with fear and longing now that my younger image decreases in portfolio and distance within my remembrances, and I struggle to keep my libido separate from the…

The Bellagio Wikileak - 10 - Sun on the Rocks

Clarity went through an additional security check before entering Brayfield´s bedroom with Everglade holding her hand. Closer to Everglade she was now as Evans had suggested, she just hadn´t planned on also being close to Brayfield.

"She likes you honey," said Everglade, flashing a smile, "I convinced her to come here with us."

"Oh!, that´s nice," said Brayfield, "well, make yourself comfortable, we have all night for you to let me know…

Taking a Mindfulness Class

I’ve been stressing out lately, playing scary scenarios in my head, rehashing conversations that went badly, even my dog quickly bored of playing with me.

I decided to take the Mindfulness class offered at a nearby hospital. Jon Kabat-Zinn has a good reputation, as a man who was trained as a Buddhist meditator who figured out how to teach meditation without the Buddhism.

I’ve meditated…

A Happy Rhythm 'n Blues Halloween to You

As I walk down the streets of my neighborhood and look at the Halloween displays that decorate the lawns and porches, I’m struck by how trite and predictable everything appears.  Tombstones angled crookedly out of the ground; cobwebs spread over shrubbery; skeletons, witches and ghosts.  Forget about the hazards to trick or treaters from silent but deadly hybrid cars speeding down darkened streets; it’s a wonder the kids don’t die of boredom.…

Because There's This Story, See (OS Archives 2014)

Written in response to, "Why are you doing NaNoWriMo?"  This piece first published at Medium.com.

Because there's this story, see...

and maybe it's more than one story. A series of stories. I don't know, but the characters are starting to get loud.

So far, I haven't written a word down.

My first character popped up when I was studying - a girl, about…

Apple CEO needs to do more than come out

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

I’m glad that Tim Cook has finally come out publicly. Everyone should. Living in the closet is not healthy, even for a giant of the tech industry. The Apple CEO broke open his closet doors in an essay in the latest issue of BusinessWeek

“Plenty of colleagues at Apple know I’m gay, and it doesn’t seem to make a difference in the way they treat me,” he writes, adding that his company has been in the forefront of…

Viral Racism?

I have contended that the "mainstream media" has been complicit in perpetrating and perpetuating racism and racial stereotypes in this country...

Racism and racial fears, like sex, sells...

So much the better for the bottom line if sexual taboos and racial fears can be conjoined in the same "story"...

The notion that mainstream mass media is somehow liberal re race and racism is itself a myth, which has been used by the media to obfuscate its role in… Continue

Whipping's Brutal Efficiency/an Argument for Slavery Reparations

Most people feel, at best, annoyed when the idea of slavery-reparations enters conversation. The knee-jerk, defensive postures include the 'no one in my family'...no one alive now or for generations either owned slaves or benefited from it.

My Mute TV Intervention

This is, without a doubt, the best time of the year for me, and not just because of the cool, crisp autumn air and New England fall foliage.  The NFL season is in full swing.  The World Series ended last night, and the Royals, the team closest to my hometown, were in it.  The professional hockey and basketball seasons have started and I’m following two college football teams.  Yes, October is a veritable cornucopia of a smorgasbord of a goulash for sports fans.

New Program Teams Bluetooth Yakkers With Demented

BOSTON.  Ted Wyzinski is a familiar sight to those who work in the South Station area here, his grizzled visage a reminder that in the race of life there are both winners and losers.  “I went off the rails in the 70s,” he says as he accepts some spare change from a passerby.  “I heard Morris Albert sing ‘Feelings’ and I guess I let my emotions take control of my life.”

“You talkin’ to me?”

Ken Venezia, by contrast, is a young man with a…
