Cyber Security

Late one night last October my computer crashed.  As I struggled to regain my hold in cyberspace I connected with PC Watchdog who had a wonderfully charming black sounding voice that could have sold me anything.  Three hundred dollars later I had a lifetime security…

Gene-Edited Micropigs to Be Sold as Pets

Gene-Edited Micropigs to Be Sold as Pets:  Cutting-edge gene-editing techniques have produced an unexpected byproduct - tiny pigs that a leading Chinese genomics institute will soon begin selling as pets.  Of course, the big concern is that skinheads and neo-Nazis may buy a bunch of them and turn them into fascist pigs.…

To those still denying fossil fuels-based climate change

"In the first place, there is general scientific agreement that the most likely manner in which mankind is influencing the global climate is through carbon dioxide release from the burning of fossil fuels."

James F. Black, senior scientist in Research and Engineering division 1977

"Present thinking holds…

Barroom Rules and Etiquette

Establishment rules are important.  Sometimes etiquette is more…

godiverse, i am so grateful... for finally beginning to surface from months of deep dark debilitating despair. one tiny baby step at a time.

well, it's more like beginning to surface very very very sloooowly but even that is a miracle and a blessing. i still can't put together exactly why i went so far in to the worst Can Barely Get Out of Bed and Having Constant Obsessive Negative Thoughts Fucking Depression. well, i do know a bit of it.  i've talked about the events of last summer that haunt me, including being fired from a writers' group. i haven't talked about the 2 therapists i saw who were beyond belief awful but i will at…

The Russian Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming

Every time we are surprised over someone else’s aggression, we act like the world is coming to an end.

It didn’t come to an end with Pearl Harbor, nor with the Battle of the Bulge.  And it isn’t coming to an end now, with the Russians flying missions in Syria.

So what do we need to do?  Well, none of our fleets are sunk, nor are our defenses penetrated.  And we still don’t have a plan for Syria.  We might have a flip chart but we don’t have a real plan that works.

What day is Tomorrow? Never Mind! What day is Today?

I can't believe I just wasted an hour and a half composing something here, only to lose it!  Welcome to my world!

Lets see if I can start over!

I was telling you about my world, the world of the sole caregiver.  About, how it all started.

It all began back in 2006.  My parents drove down to St Pete, for a Sunday visit.  We went out for lunch, and my Dad drove.  I had noticed for awhile, that his driving scared me.  However today, they got lost trying to find my…

I apologize to Tommi Mecca and Safe Bet's Amy about Pope Francis

Today it was announced that Pope Francis asked to meet with Kim Davis. It is reported that he supported her act of civil disobedience.

I have told both Tommy and Amy that this Pope was going to take a long time to change Church doctrine in any appreciable way when it came to the LGBT population but that his heart was fundamentally in the right place, that their expectations of him were unreasonable. On this…

After Philip Levine's Memorial at The Great Hall at Cooper Union 9/24/2015

I told the man next to me I only knew Philip from his work, but that wasn't entirely true.

I knew him from his city, Detroit, which was also my city.  We shared the majestic diseased elms, the

factories, the cars, the culture, the Diego Rivera mural, the gangs, the leaves burning in the street,

the language, the Stroh's Brewery, the expressways, the white exodus, the riots, the folks who lived and

died there and the grief from its destruction.

     I sent…

BREAKING NEWS - goddam meddling pope

It is pretty well confirmed, being reported by The Guardian and the New York Times, that the pope met with Kim Davis (who didn't have the good sense to keep it to herself, of course), and commended her on her courage.

This looks at quick glance like a pro-pope site.   (they're on a first-name basis, I see)

From this…

A Change of Season

The squirrels have been unusually active in recent weeks, scampering down the elm and maple trunks, venturing out across the backyard to scrounge out and secure whatever edible nuggets they can find, then scampering up again and across the skywalk of limbs to stock the larder of their nests.  They are preparing for winter.

Soon, I, too, will be preparing, clearing eve troughs, raking the leaves, detaching hoses from spigots, transporting cans of paint from the garage to the…

I'd Rather Be Lucky Than Good

There's an article on SA, that starts with Abraham Wald, a Brit stat who, during WWII defied the generals. Not a team player, he. The issue was how to re-armor aircraft in order to save them and, more importantly, the flyers. The generals looked at the bullet holes, pointed, and said, "there". Wald also looked and said, "not so much".

What's of interest, beyond the…

A Selection From Einstein's Letters

Letters written by Albert Einstein to his family have shed light on the scientist’s personal life, including a dozen extramarital affairs and a series of bad investments.

To Ethel Michanowski, a Berlin socialite who became his lover:…

My life on the internets tubes -- confession and introspection

I have been feeling so discombobulated lately. Mr. Community Organizer has been all over the place lately. I will not bore you with the picayune details of all things local politics and how it all relates to the homeless struggle in the USA. Waaay too much. But I have not only been living my life on the internet. I've been influencing all sorts of people. After all, I organized my Facebook page as a political organizing tool and local news feed.

The 21st Century is indeed a miraculous…

Bank Robbery Couple Busted After Facebook Posts

Bank Robbery Couple Busted After Facebook Posts:  A Ohio man and his girlfriend have been arrested for bank robbery after they posted photos of themselves and the loot they stole to Facebook.  How strange they got busted.  Who could have known that police use the internet too?  The lesson here folks is if you absolutely must brag online about crimes you’ve committed, for heaven’s sakes, do it on sites such as LinkedIn or MYSpace where its pretty much…

I have too much going on

A few weeks ago, I thought that I would start blogging again.  How silly of me!

I thought that blogging was something that comes easy to me.  I guessed wrong.  I forgot that since the demise of Open Salon, much has happened to me.  I bought a house, that needed a lot of work. I'm constantly working on somehting. I'm still caring for my now 95 year old Mom, who has mild dementia.  I have a dog who always wants me to play with him!

So I don't really know if I've got what it takes…

Exporting the Revolution

“I cannot help asking those who have forced this situation, do you realize now what you have done?"

Vladimir Putin, speaking to the United Nations

The greatest factor motivating American participation in the Cold War was that the Soviets were intent on exporting the Communist revolution. We had to prevent that. First it happened in Eastern Europe, when the Soviets refused to…

Fact-Checking Your Fiction

It isn’t often I sell a piece of fiction; in the twenty-one years since I started to write in earnest, more often than the Boston Bruins have won the Stanley Cup (1) but less often than the New England Patriots have won the Super Bowl (4).  So I’m neck-and-neck with the Red Sox, who’ve won the World Series three times during that period–except that a publication that bought one of my pieces decided not to run it and sent me a “kill” fee for my trouble.  Sort of like a death in the family,…
