My Nightmare

I'm fairly certain that at least 90% of my problems can be traced back to Freddy Kruger.

The first time I saw A Nightmare on Elm Street, I was five. It was the most terrifying thing that I had ever seen. I would have nightmares about it for the next fifteen years. It wasn't because of the gruesome murders. It wasn't because of the murderers supernatural abilities. It had nothing to do with the exceptional makeup work for the time or Robert England's acting skills. It was because when…

The Cleaning Lady

I am still adjusting to the fact that I have a cleaning lady in my employ even after more than a year now, brim full of hubris as I am about my own self-sufficiency. I would never have sought out one in order to engage her services.

This all came about just before La Mexicana moved to Mazatlán to be closer to her son and his family. Laura had been cleaning her house once a week during all of the years that La Mexicana lived here and had become her confidante and good friend, too. The…

Am I just an old bastard or do I share the road with idiots?

Please allow me this moment of kvetching, which sometimes is the cheapest, bestest form of therapy.

On the way home tonight I glanced into my rear-view mirror and saw a young man driving a battered old garbage scow about 10 centimeters off my bumper. If his steering wheel had been a living thing it would have long since asphyxiated as he was gripping it the way Hans Gruber gripped Holly McClane's Rolex as he plunged from the upper floors of Nakatomi Plaza. He appeared unhappy I was…

Beautiful Nothing

How long have I hated myself? I really can't remember a time when I didn't. My mother told me I was the happiest person in the world until I was 15. That's when things started changing. Things happened I didn't have an answer for. Thus began the never-ending cycle of blaming the most obvious person - me.

My body was changing, boys were taking notice. My friends hated it. My mom had cancer and was in the hospital more than she was out. I was molested. I went from most popular to most…

"But after my dreaded beheading

I tied that sucker back on with a string

And I guess I'm pretty different now

I feel you,

around the corner,

in the attic

a steady pulsating rhythm, like IT

L'Engle, King style ITs-

all encompassing boogieman

unbalanced evil always ruins the honesty

and why is fear always the first emotion of lust?

My Possum Story

Last night I went into the wash room to get a small bowl of my dairy free ice cream ( yuck but it's ice something) and as I opened the door something moved in the dog food box that had been left uncovered yet again.

As I stood there a possum came out of the box and I screamed, yelled, cussed loudly, and ran from the room...such a girl.

I calmed myself…

Righteous Indignation at the Righteously Indignant

What IS this world coming to when we can’t just turn a blind eye to those promoting hate and bigotry. I mean, does it really matter if members of corporate America are using money to support organizations that work every day to discriminate against fellow Americans? Sure, maybe it IS technically their own personal money. Sure, maybe they go on record as saying that the company they built supports this bigotry and will continue to do so. We all have the right to free speech in…

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning I wake up and start an argument.

Maybe I’ll just skip the cardio dance class today.  My hair looks too cute to sweat.

Think Nike, Lezlie.  Stop your malingering, you twit.  Get your ass up!”

That teacher at the senior community center seems to forget how OLD we are.  So what if she is running marathons every month  and she is in her 50s. Big whoop!

“Just do it, you wimp.  You know how…

Warming in the Willows

To all who knew our Toad:  he was so often the best and only sometimes worst.   Rich in heart and obsessions, he was an amphibian among men.  I must confirm today the rumors are true: Mr. Toad is dead.

The Toad is Toast.

You have no doubt heard the ignominious details of his demise.  The jade green deco bathroom on the 1st floor is cordoned by tape and the investigation continues.  It was his favorite room, so toad-like in its décor, so wet and humid when in normal…

playing with my emotional excrement

Lorianne has a current post up about refining your work. Got me to thinking "I should try that!"

It's vaguely unpleasant, hence the current title

Putin Is Pussy Whipped!

Dangerous girrrrls!

Russian weak man "Pussy" Putin broke down wailing in tears when he found out not everyone loved him. "It's like I rigged the election for nothing!" he openly lamented. "I just pulled out my last…

The Gang Girls of Cleveland

Lately I have been remembering a project I was involved with years ago, bringing improvisational theatre activities into a female juvenile detention center in Cleveland Ohio. It was an experience which troubled me then, and continues to trouble me today.

We were a group of 4 or 5 actors and actresses, relatively new out of university with our fresh BFA degrees, and we went as part of an unpaid professional theatre internship to help the inmates better express themselves. The…

Meaningless Work

[cross-posted from OpenSalon]

News flash: Julie White has determined that her work is meaningless. That working in a community college (possibly any college) is akin to factory work. There’s always another class coming down the chute/line/table, another group of first-year students who do not know --- fill in the blank. And need to be taught. There is no end to them. They cannot be gobbled up like the candy poor Lucy and Ethel stuffed into their mouths in a panicked attempt to keep…

If men had periods

Can you imagine what this cruel world would be like if the gender roles were reversed and us poor males were, of a sudden, cursed with the monthly blood?

I shiver at the thought!

Myself, can't even get a little cold without whining like an infant and calling…

Mentors I Haven't Met

Most of my life, I've waited and waited for my mentor to come along. You know, that magical, mystical (and hopefully hot) elder who would gently yet firmly instruct and guide me down the yellow brick road of life.

But alas, nobody. Sure, some great teachers, but no wise man with a white beard and stern voice.

So I was forced to expand the definition of mentors. Below is a list of mentors I haven't met, but have shaped my path nonetheless.…

Nobody Said It Had To Be Fair... Life Is Not Fair

When I was a kid and complaining about something not being ‘fair’, my Dad’s routine reply was: “nobody ever said it had to be fair… life is not fair”.  He was right of course.  However, today it seems that everybody is consumed with the topic of fairness.

It’s not fair that I can’t be a rock star…

My Last Waffle Fry

The first time my daughter and I saw a Chik-fil-A  at the local mall, we had to try it. Best chicken sandwich ever, my daughter proclaimed. Not big on fast food, I agreed, the waffle fries were pretty darn tasty. We got two orders that day.

About a year ago, I wrote a piece about boycotting certain companies and products. I compared it to the "whack-a-mole" game I played at an arcade once. We find out something about a company we cannot support,…
