April 2016 Blog Posts (360)

oh wow, the white house correspondents dinner 2016 is making me very happy. the speeches haven't started yet but the fashion is fabulous...

and the presidential blooper reel is a riot. turns out that being Clear is his go to phrase. and that he always checks to see if the microphone is on. well, most of the time. and then there were the Mom jeans. but, shit, the man has class which is in such short supply these days, in this travesty that is the Republican competition.

obama rocked his speech, most of it anyway. took potshots at drumf and cruz of course. excellent bits. same with his jabs at the correspondents. i'm such…

Astronomers Find First Tailless Comet

Astronomers Find First Tailless Comet:  Astronomers say they have found a first-of-its-kind tailless comet whose composition may offer clues into long-standing questions about the solar system's formation and evolution.  Ironically, when scientists first observed the object, they weren’t exactly sure what it was, so they decided to put a tail on it.  Researchers say they were very lucky to find it before someone like Bruce Willis tries to destroy it.  When…

Shakespeare On Trump: Open Call!

One can only hope that upon defeat, Trump's followers and supporters will go quietly into the night without incident. Only time will tell...

As for Trump himself. I'll borrow from Shakespeare, paraphrasing and, of course, and taking license:

"Trump is but a walking shadow who struts and frets his hour upon the stage,…

ON TRANSGRESSION & FORGIVENESS

We can all identify with the feeling of indignation that comes along with having been usurped in some way by a fellow human being. And Western society, especially, has a lot to say about how we are supposed to act & feel in these situations. One misconception which we all, I'm sure in…

The Danger of Trump's Candidacy

One of the enduring hallmarks of American Democracy is the peaceful and seamless transition when one president leaves office and the newly elected president is inaugurated. This often occurs within the context of a change in the political party taking control of the reins of government. Much of the world marvels at how this occurs without vitriol and violence.

The danger of Trump's candidacy is that he and his followers/supporters threaten the stability of the peaceful transition.…

A chilly, sunny April Saturday. There’s just me and two cats, Rocco and Okie, three sullen males grunting their way through the day–as usual–while the wife’s running errands.…

Geography Trivia question, possibly easy

Without looking at a map:

This evening, I was in four states within forty-five minutes, driving in a straight line. I'm in the fourth at the moment. I am not Southbound.

Where am I?

winding road

I tend to not be inclined to want to [attempt to] give tributes to fallen artists and won't begin today, but I ran across this, The Artist Formerly Known As and Sheryl Crow, Nineteen and Ninety Nine, doing her bands' song, his arrangement .. as I understand it. Every day is a winding road indeed. I fear I may be guilty of not…

I Was Having Prostrate Difficulties

Overture:

But [productivity] is also really hard to measure, particularly for service firms. (How productive were employees at Facebook, or your local bank, last quarter? Have fun trying to figure it out.)

-- Neil Irwin/2016

More times than I can count, these essays have mentioned that productivity software (word processing, spreadsheets, and…

Poem for a Rainy Day

THE DEATH OF THE POET JOHN MILTON, NOV 8, 1674

(as described by the writer john guzlowski)

John Milton died alone in his room,

his daughter Ann picking herbs

in the garden, parsley and rosemary.

She said she’d be right back,

and he said nothing.  He was dying,

and didn’t want his daughter with him.

There was something about the way

she sat in silence…

How to Review Your Own Book

For those who want to make a living as writers, the situation grows more dire every day. There are increasingly fewer publications that review books, and space in the ones that remain is reserved mainly for celebrity and political bios and big-name novelists whose works are supported by large advertising budgets. Funny how that works out.

But you’ve got to believe in yourself before anyone else will. If you can’t get somebody else to review your book, why not review it…

The Guarantor of Equality Under Law

As I've shared, the Tennessee governor this week signed a bill allowing therapists asserting religious conviction to refuse services to LGBT citizens.

And isn't it the point that no professional association should, with the embrace of the Law, make any move that tends to isolate or to stigmatize any…
