What do y'all think about having an Our Salon Writers Competition?

I was thinking giving the entrants two weeks to write a post for each of the 11 tag categories (Art/Photography, Belief/Religion, "Current Events/Politics", Entertainment, Fiction, "Personal Narrative/Life", Music, Humor, Poetry, Non-Fiction, "Open Call").

A "Team" of Judges (hopefully led by Lorianne) would then read each "set" of posts and rate each one (1 - 10 scale???).  The winner would be the writer with the highest score.

So what'cha think???

hmmmm  i might be able to set up a thing so everyone could vote on posts the same way we now "like" them...err maybe.

I like the idea!

One for *each* category?? Yikes!

BUT... I like it too! A challenge!

(...but maybe not this week to start??)

Great idea, if it were a "writers' competition" and not a popularity contest.

A great idea and it would force everyone to write outside their comfort zone.

The holidays might no be the time start, but then it's the same handicap for everyone.

I like Lorianne's idea - except - I'm afraid it would be the most popular girl that got to be cheerleader.

I like the concept but I have to agree with Rodney on the voting aspect.

I didn't see Monkey's comment as I was laboriously editing mine. Blind voting might work but how do you force people to read all of the entries? I'm assuming it would be open to all of the denizens here and not just the entrants.

Eleven posts in two weeks that are all worthy of competition? I think that requirement will limit the entrants pretty severely, so I'd be inclined to limit it more to encourage more participation.

Also, what are judging criteria?

I have a way around popularity. Amy, the problem is you'd have to Friend all participants unless you're willing to ask Lorianne for more work, which I think might take too much nerve. Accept entries as PM's, copy all entries per topic into one long post without the names of the authors. Judge the work blind. In some subjects the authors might be obvious but it's a step in the right direction.

if you give me some time, i can figure out how to set it up so all competition posts go to the same place and maybe even blind voting.  How to vote? well i would say if its under humor vote what you find humorous and so on...

My two cents on the popular vote bias?

The most popular cheerleader around here seems to be the one who has the stomach for sticking with contentious topics the longest, so, no worries about 'girls' taking over the already imagined as biased win. (really???)  There does not seem to be one popular 'girl' here!

Except Lorianne, of course. She wins. Contest over. Don't bother writing. She is head cheerleader, hands down.

(Ai yi yi.)

(Excuse my snark, I ate ice cream at the children's party and played with My Little Pony with a three year-old. The snark is just oozing out at this point. ... and I already erased the really good stuff.)

As someone who will NEVER be defined as the popular 'girl' (and who gives adamn about being "popular", but IS someone who will gladly knock your teeth down your throat for paternalistically calling me "girl"!), I think maybe we could all vote like ADULTS and rate each entry based on it's merits???  You don't need to be Stevie Wonder to vote based upon the quality of the content, FFS.

I, personally, also like the idea of HAVING to write for each category because, being sort of a "one note banjo" myself, it would make us reach beyond our normal stuff (I mean can you just imagine how hard it would be for me to write credibly about "art" or "religion"?  SERIOUSLY???)  Seeing as how my "goal" isn't so much to let someone "win" the highly vaunted title of "OS Writer Competition Winner" ::roll eyes::, but to create more diverse content and "challenge" everyone without having the usual arguments (you can see how well THAT idea is working already LOL) Ima sticking to my suggestion.

What I DON'T want to do is create more work for Lorianne.  She does enough, gets thanked rarely and works her butt off behind the scenes relentlessly.

BTW, I'd also LIKE to see a few other rules in place, too.

  • Poetry needs to be "original" (LOL  I'm SOOOO screwed)
  • Posting only a meme or video ("Hi" me & Ron), writing a 200,000 treatise on some arcane subject no one will EVER give a rat's ass about ("Hi" KS & Rob), no personal slam pieces ("Hi" AKA & ABG!) or "One Sentence Wonder" posts ("Hi" a whole bunch of us!).
  • No posted that confuse the shit out of me like Doc Vega writing a freaking Christmas poem! (this one is optional, but still...)
