What do y'all think about having an Our Salon Writers Competition?

I was thinking giving the entrants two weeks to write a post for each of the 11 tag categories (Art/Photography, Belief/Religion, "Current Events/Politics", Entertainment, Fiction, "Personal Narrative/Life", Music, Humor, Poetry, Non-Fiction, "Open Call").

A "Team" of Judges (hopefully led by Lorianne) would then read each "set" of posts and rate each one (1 - 10 scale???).  The winner would be the writer with the highest score.

So what'cha think???

hmmmm  i might be able to set up a thing so everyone could vote on posts the same way we now "like" them...err maybe.

I like the idea!

One for *each* category?? Yikes!

BUT... I like it too! A challenge!

(...but maybe not this week to start??)

Great idea, if it were a "writers' competition" and not a popularity contest.

I like it!

IMO we have to read all competitors.  so it has to be tagged as writers competition entry.

A great idea and it would force everyone to write outside their comfort zone.

The holidays might no be the time start, but then it's the same handicap for everyone.

I like Lorianne's idea - except - I'm afraid it would be the most popular girl that got to be cheerleader.

all of life is a popularity contest - lets get real.  that's why the rules should be we have to read all the entries.  I mean what if we have a closet hemingway in the running.  how will we know?  so we have to promise to participate fully

I think if the votes are in the same form as the LIKES but blind (meaning we don't see the results until the end), there's a good chance for a fair result.  people will click if they're impressed.  that's my belief anyway, cockeyed optimist that I yam (as popeye would say).

I like the concept but I have to agree with Rodney on the voting aspect.

I didn't see Monkey's comment as I was laboriously editing mine. Blind voting might work but how do you force people to read all of the entries? I'm assuming it would be open to all of the denizens here and not just the entrants.

Eleven posts in two weeks that are all worthy of competition? I think that requirement will limit the entrants pretty severely, so I'd be inclined to limit it more to encourage more participation.

Also, what are judging criteria?

I have a way around popularity. Amy, the problem is you'd have to Friend all participants unless you're willing to ask Lorianne for more work, which I think might take too much nerve. Accept entries as PM's, copy all entries per topic into one long post without the names of the authors. Judge the work blind. In some subjects the authors might be obvious but it's a step in the right direction.
