What to do? “You gonna pull that pistol or just whistle Dixie?”

Sunday, Sept 23: 12:03pmEDT: In the last thirty minutes100% of the 100 “Most Recent” Posts on Open Salon  have been SPAM.  It’s High Noon, but Tex Ritter is dead and there’s no one to sing Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darlin’ and as Clint Eastwood asked that young Bluecoat in The Outlaw Josey Wales, “You gonna pull that pistol or just whistle Dixie?”

I’m no Gary Cooper but it’s time to poop or get off the pot, draw the Red Line, cross that line in the sand on the banks of the Rubicon, jump the shark and make a stand here at the Alamo of Open Salon!  Damn!  Now I wish I chewed tobacco so I could spit in the dust for cinematic effect.

According to Tinkertink69, bless his fuzzy kitty butt, the war is lost spammers win!  Jacob has actually selected this post as an Editor’s Pick although it didn’t make the cover!!!  Many other Open Salon members agree and some even adhere to a theory of collusion between OS management and SPAMMERS, which may or may not be the case. That prodigious OS SPAM KILLER mishima666 supports many of their conclusions with hard numbers: “jmac1949 says ‘…92% of the last 200 posts have been SPAM…’ and if one were to look only at the Most Recent list that would be a reasonable conclusion.  Recently I decided to take a more detailed look at spam.  In the process of doing that, I came across one spam account, user "lalon sah," that over a five or six day period generated 14,600 spam posts.  Yes, fourteen thousand six hundred spam posts . . . . That averages out to around 2,500 spam posts per day from A SINGLE SPAMMER.”

Hard to argue with that reality, but somehow, someway Jacob Sugarman and the OSIT cabal have managed to maintain relatively consistent access and response at Open Salon since Thursday, September 20th.  I’ve more or less been on line everyday in the last ten days, run into a few “error messages” and watched the site drop into slow motion occasionally; but, so far conditions have tangibly improved since the debacle between August 28th and September 18th.  Jake and his crew deserve credit where it’s due.

So what am I gonna do: “pull that pistol or just whistle Dixie?”  Hmmm??  When faced with seemingly overwhelming opposition in my professional life, I try to maneuver into a strategic position where I can step out of the way and toss some rope to any over exuberant “enemies” as they surge past me and watch them hang themselves as they go off the cliff.  It’s a tactic that’s served me well over the years, but here on Open Salon it’s hard to tell who or what is at fault.

If I pull the trigger on the proposed Boycott and if other frustrated OS writers join the Exodus to other sites, are we fighting the SPAMBOTS or surrendering?  Forever looking to the past for appropriate metaphoric responses to determine action, I’m reminded of Gen. Anthony McAuliffe’s reply to a German surrender ultimatum at Bastogne, during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II.  On December 22, 1944, surrounded and running low on food and ammunition, McAuliffe went down in history with his one word response to General von Lüttwitz: "Nuts!"

So, that’s my answer to the onslaught of SPAMBOTS, “Nuts!  Go to hell!  Up yours!  Kiss my pale boney butt!  You suck a big green donkey penis in the dark closet where you and your underpaid offshore minions hide!!”

As long as Jacob and the OSIT crew continue to maintain semi-reasonable access to Open Salon, I’ll continue to post, read, rate and comment.  I’ll also continue to double post at Our Salon, and I expect that if I can figure out how to connect with all those folks over there, I’ll be reading, liking and commenting at that site as well.

And by the way, if Jacob and the IT boys decide to expand the privilege of closing SPAMMER accounts to other legitimate OS members, I’ll happily volunteer to join mishima666 in a coordinated counterattack!  After over two years as sanctioned Open Salon Spam Cop, he seems to be a bit discouraged and I’d love to be able to help out.

Thanks for this, Jmac. I'm also impressed that OS is still functioning. But when will we know it is lost for good? When should we all abandon ship and move over to Our Salon? OS was a great site once upon a time, and as long as we still use it, Big Salon has at least some incentive to fix it.
