The constant refrain from the most profitable industry (not counting the FIRE parasites), "we need sky-high prices because we save lives", is, once again, belied. Here's the story.

Those who received pumps (785) survived a median of 67 months, compared with 44 months for patients who did not get them (1,583). The result was especially striking, Dr. D'Angelica said, because patients who got pumps were sicker to begin with.

May be there'll be enough backlash to throw the critters out of the swamp.

I would think if they could continue to manufacture these as is they’d simply raise the price if that were the issue. Do we know that this really isn’t raw material availability?

I’m familiar with the Medtronic because my son had one. It delivered an anti-spasticity drug directly into his spine, which meant the doses were both targeted and way, way tinier than if taken orally. It had to be refilled every month or two, depending on how quickly it had to deliver the drug, and the way refills happened is that you could find the edge of the pump through the skin, then put a template over it, and the template showed where a syringe could go through what I guess was a rubber membrane to get the drug inside the pump. It’s been enough years that the name of the drug escapes me. It was about the dimensions of a hockey puck.

given the results described in the article, one might expect a "life saving" device from a "life saving" company be transferred to the public domain, or even the Damn Gummint, to manufacturer.  some goods are public goods.  this one is archetypal.

Nothing goes to the public domain anymore, it's all about greed.

That link is about the saddest thing I've ever read.

I hope they sell the technology to Medtronic if they’re getting out.l
