Hi guys,

I've been getting quite a few emails and other kinds of messages these past few hours...I want to thank you all for thinking of me, Julien, and the boyfriend.  We're all okay, but sad and shaken by what's going on in our beloved city, by the loss of so many innocent people.

Our hearts go out to them and our thoughts are with their loved ones.

Hi Alyssa.
Your news is probably more complete than ours. Could you give us a basic update? Thanks.

Thanks so much for your kind words, guys.

To answer Kosh's question, what we know as of now is that there could be as many as 140 dead, mostly from the hostage situation/massacre at the Bataclan dance hall.  The City of Paris has been officially asking, via social media and the city's electronic information panels, for everyone to stay inside.  Some Metro and bus lines have been closed down - although by now (it's 2am here) most would be shutting down anyway.  Because of these restrictions, some people who would normally have used public transport to get back to their homes or hotels in the suburbs or at the opposite side of the city are now stranded here and that's brought about one good thing: Lots of Parisians are taking to social media and offering a place to stay (we'd do it, too, but Julien and I are battling the flu, so it would probably just be a way to make someone's already terrible evening just a little bit worse).  All of France's borders are exceptionally closed - you can only get through via checkpoint, which is pretty much unheard-of among Schengen countries.  Tomorrow, some streets or even entire areas could be closed to traffic.  As of now, those are the things I know.  The mood here is hard to define - I know everyone must be freaking out and sad, like we are (to put it mildly).  The boyfriend was at a movie tonight when the whole thing happened, and I was so afraid.  He said that he noticed a lot of people were leaving well before the end of the film, so he thinks they might have had cell reception and found out what was going on.   But our neighborhood, which isn't extremely close to everything, seems calm and normal.  Maybe even calmer than normal.  It's such a strange contrast to what we're seeing on the news, although from time to time we hear ambulance and police sirens rushing by outside our windows.

I don't know if any of that is helpful, but it's all I've got. I've also been finding that the internet/social media are much more up-to-date than news channels.

Thank you. Hold one another, all of you, friend.
