Was Anything Ever Meant to Be?

My first love was a willowy Southern Bell
Ten years together and it didn't turn out well
Welcome to my personal living hell
Did she really love me? I could never tell,

The second time around
It seemed there was true love I'd finally found
Vaguely remembering those love making sounds
Just another tormented soul who couldn't stick around

They say the third time is the charm
Sometimes your best instincts don't sound the alarm
East meets West shouldn't have been any harm
Once again abandonment and I lost the farm,

The past bleeds in the present in a broken heart
Those who doom love right from the very start
Can't give up the feelings tearing them apart
Fatalism that can't be measured it's off the charts,

Was anything ever meant to be?
All this heartache just trying to be free
Thought I could judge character thought I could tell
Welcome to my personal hell.
