Voices from Germans in Hitler's Germany

Taken from interviews in the early 1990s

I saw them overcome, one by one

My friends, my neighbors, even my family

They were mesmerized by the black magic

It was easier to just give in to it

Only the strongest were able to resist

Their reward was torture and death

The "superior ones" got all their information

From the Völkischer Beobachter

It told them what they wanted to hear

It inflated their false sense of self-esteem

In order to make small people feel big

It taught them to hate everyone opposed to them

Everyday we struggled with the new reality

People who considered themselves Christians

People who loved their families and friends

People who professed extreme patriotism

Seemed possessed with dual personalities

One ready to strike you if you dare speak truth

Only the alternative truth was allowed in public

Holidays and family gatherings became brawls

Silence became the friend of those too weak to fight

Cowards became friends with dark corners and solitude

Every time another person chose silence

The world around us became a little darker

I remember my own struggle with the dark side

Those momentary lapses of conscience

I would catch myself wanting to believe the lies

Then some unconscionable act of inhumanity

An evil so violent, so inexcusable

Would awaken me back into the nightmare

Some have called me lucky to have survived

With only a number embellishing my skin

But this number is seared onto my soul

It will follow me through eternity

For I too was dragged to the edge of the abyss

Where I saw the face of eternal Hell

The most difficult thing for me is to have been given this task to tell their stories and their warnings, only to be greeted with the same exact delusional behavior that created their nightmares. One of the worst ideas in American culture was the idea that anyone can become president! It's right up there with the American Dream. Presidents should be qualified and getting rich is not a morally defensible goal unless you can do it without hurting others!

If nothing else, the country is now learning very graphically that not anyone should become President.
