Trumpxit - Not that What I Might have to Say Makes any Difference

Well the Brits have cast their lot to make their exit from the EU.  The pound crashed this morning and world wide stock markets did their ritual swan dives - down 2.5-3%.  American corporations are falling back to Plan B and David Cameron is resigning as Prime Minister.  President Obama has expressed his regrets while Donald Trump, true to form congratulated the voters of Scotland for choosing to exit the EU, even though they didn't.

CNN speculates that the Brexit vote may be a harbinger for a Trump victory in November.  I'd offer up some observations and historical perspective about the swings of the political pendulum, but as an obnoxious hipster pointed out twenty years ago, "Nobody's interested in what you've got to say."

Instead I refer you to a fictitious American President, Andrew Shepard:

Well, the nice thing about Our is that we like to hear what you have to say but I know what you mean.  No one really cares and Britain will do what they will do and we forget that the world is volatile and explosive at all time.  I like to see thing change but it scares me too because I always saw the EU as a bastion of safety like a net to keep the rest of the world away from the Atlantic.  Time will tell.

My solace from this monumentally idiotic move is that our electorate's so different.

Maybe we're smarter than the English. I won't say the Brits because the Scots rejected Brexit.

Thanks one and all for reading and commenting; and then there's this: U.S. secessionists hankering for 'Texit' with other wingnuts running amok in California, Vermont, New Hampshire and Hawaii.

Here in Canada Quebec is always threatening to leave...and voting on it a couple of times (losing by small amount).  It's always this idea of controlling-our-own-thing.  But the world isn't like that any more.  It's like trying to be a self-sufficient hermit in the middle of a metropolis - can only hurt yourself.

Quebec has been trying to separate from Canada since the 18th Century. Then King George III tried to saddle the thirteen American Colonies with the bill and we all know what happened with that.   R&L ;-)

Clinton stretches lead over Trump to 14 points... Brexit, like G_D, works in mysterious ways.

Re Quebec, in the first referendum the margin was close to 20 points.  Not so small.

The Brexit result was awful.  There's a very good chance that well before the 2 years of exit negotiations, a majority of Brits will regret their choice.  What was most distressing was the sense that it was in some way preferable to shun expert recommendation.  Why bother educating anyone if you're going to rely on the guy with the catchiest barroom turn of phrase??

It's highly likely that within a few years Scotland will take a hike and Northern Ireland will have to join the south (which the majority Prots do not want) or re-implement border controls (which would violate the Blair Easter agreement).

The result also encourages the smaller-minded factions throughout continental Europe.  Most are very right-wing and most want out.  Make of that what you will.
