Tom Petty was found in total cardiac arrest today and was initially on life support but he didn't make it. He was 66.

My daughter's boyfriend asked me if I were worried. After all, I turned 63 yesterday. No, not really - my drug intake was pretty minimal. He was on heroin for a decade. I know about that - my twenty-seven year old nephew's heart gave out last winter a year after he kicked heroin.

Petty had just come off a very long tour and was looking forward to spending time with his granddaughter. I feel for her.

I assume most of you know who Tom Petty is, of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

Look carefully at the other musicians.

He was also part of the Traveling Wilburys, the must star-studded lineup of any group I can think of.

In the early days, he reminded me sonically a bit of Roger McGuinn of the Byrds. You may hear it here, where they both share a stage - with a few other guys:

Petty also programmed a satellite music channel.

This was sudden and unexpected. He will be missed. Certainly by me.

Was curious to see how heroin affects heart:

Autopsies of heroin addicts were carried out to find out why so many heroin users suffer irregular heartbeats. In half of them, the electrical controls of the heart had been replaced by fatty or fibrous tissue. More than half showed inflammation in the same area. —http://www.narconon.org/drug-abuse/heroin/damage.html

I just read an update. His death may have been announced prematurely - this is ambiguous. If alive, his survival is tenuous.

Thanks for the update Kosh. From what they're saying it seems likely he wasn't breathing for long enough after his heart attack that he's now in what is medically described as a "persistently vegetative state." Whatever is going on with him exactly, it's bad suckage any way you look at it.

I'll miss him, too. His music is among my favorites. Love the Traveling Wilburys.

Damn what a year for losing music legends – Merle Haggard (and it looks like Willie won't be far behind), Walter Becker of Steely Dan, Glen Campbell, Greg Allman, Don Williams, Chuck Berry, Larry Coryell, Al Jarreau, Butch Trucks – and now Tom Petty. I'm sure I missed more than a few. I suppose that's also an sign of having lived a long time myself.

I wasn't aware of all of those, but yeah.

We stayed up until the (very) wee hours this morning listening to Petty CDs and watching him perform live on a DVD special. "One foot in the grave, one foot on the pedal...." He was something special.
