The Third Ward, Newark, New Jersey. I’m not from there, legends are legends, myths are myths. Asbury Park was a day trip from the third ward, but Long Branch was closer. Before there was a train to Long Branch from the city there was a boat to Long Branch.

Longy had two armored trucks that took booze from the beach back north legend has it, but like The Chin, nobody wanted to talk about him. Business was business.

Prohibition failed, but successfully enabled organized opposition capable of checking the rise of the Nazis hand to hand in the streets of Newark. Nobody wanted to talk about this either.

Power, political power, is purchased. Holding moral high ground does not prolong one’s life into middle age in any age. King...died a young man. Longy had a longer run, who left this world early, but not as early as King.

Justice. The enterprise expanded by the justification of genocide, and the importation of labor...indentured or slave, to commodify the prize in God’s name. How does one man turn that ship around?  The enterprise was no miracle.  Deforestation is no miracle.

King...was right. He held the moral high ground. Longy had vice, and owned politicans...formed the “commission” to increase profits, and invested those profits. It was just business, and so was the enterprise. No miracle.

Longy was a hitter, no Ghandi. King knew. He tossed himself on that pyre, and then the enterprise struck back. Three steps back.

The enterprise was what it was, what it is, before radio waves and then Hollywood glorified violence; smacking the hearts and minds of a world stunned and mesmerized by magical sounds and flickering images.  The enterprise was caught pants down, but recovered...and then caught unprepared again by the internet, and a better version of Longy’s commission.

Chaos. Blowback...the enterprise wobbles having nothing but lies and myths to stand on, with a President Drone at the helm. The trees are gone,  the earth is warming,  King is dead.  And yet I’m fearlessly optimistic. I believe in miracles. So did King. King knew.

King knew that "we shall overcome one day"...

I take your point, but bad guys were glorified long before radio and Hollywood. Robin Hood and Jesse James became folk heroes because they were good at PR. They robbed from the rich and gave to the poor, don'tcha know? Yeah, but how much did they keep for themselves?

Despite the best efforts of some courageous pacifists over the ages – Jesus, Gandhi and Martin Luther King come immediately to mind, this remains a dog-eat-dog world, where the Law of the Tooth and the Claw remains in full force, save for a thin veneer of justice being meted out by an over-taxed and under-funded legal system, which clearly hands out charges, convictions, and punishments in a classist and racist manner. See Donald Trump, Jeffrey Epstein, OJ Simpson and a host of others for details.

My take? Men will continue to kill each other, until there is only one man left standing, and he will die of loneliness.

    Thanks for reading and commenting!

RP: ...or die working at it. Better is fine with me.

TC: The crafting of the mass psyche...selling via powerful new mediums...ideas and morals, creating wants. It’s difficult to control top down when the masses march or goose step  to a beat not yet proven to succor the status quo.

I’m ok with your take...I’m sure the place will do fine without us.
