Thoughts on My Day Trip to Tijuana:
Well, just drove back from Mexico and funny thing - all those disease-ridden, angry, rock-throwing, evil people Trump and Fox News warn us about every hour on the hour - were completely non-existent. Gee, is it possible that Trump and Fox News could have been lying through their teeth? The answer, of course, is no - but that's only because most Trump supporters don’t even have enough teeth to lie through.

You reminded me of the old joke – what has 38 teeth and an IQ of 147? The front row at a Merle Haggard concert.

I repeat that joke with come reluctance, since I am a great admirer of the late Merle Haggard, as a singer and songwriter. I must also add that living as I do in the unrepentant and misguided South, most of the people here of my acquaintance are what used do be called "salt of the earth" types. That is to say, they are kind and caring. Unfortunately, they also are part of a Southern tradition that distrusts intellectuals and proudly embraces ignorance - which helps to explain their support of the ignoramus in the White House. It's also true that most of them are anti-government – while living off of it.

I couldn't agree more - including your Merle Haggard feelings!

I also have been to Tijuana many times, none recently though! I have traveled much in Mexico and speak pretty fair Spanish. I love the place! Me amo mucho Mexico!

I, too, am a Merle Haggard fan. He is not well understood by many of the masses. He, like Willie Nelson, enjoyed his weed. He was a true poet and observer of the human condition.

Tom describes Texas also. I guess we are part of the Deep South as well. Ignorance and bigotry are well established.

But I remain the eternal optimist and even in these dark times I see glimmers of hope!

While I see "glimmers of hope" here and there, I am not at all optimistic about the future of humanity.

A word or two more about Merle – there is no better explanation of why we are where we are today than Merle's song "Are the Good Times Really Over?" If you haven't heard it in a long time, listen closely to the words. Here's a sample:

"Wish a buck was still silver, like it was when the country was strong
Back before Elvis and the Vietnam War came along
Before the Beatles and "Yesterday", when a man could still work and still would
Is the best of the free life behind us now ... are the good times really over for good?"
