This week, the first full week of the new year, you were twenty-one-and-a-half months old.

You seemed to be more delighted by songs than ever. You often sang “Happy, happy, happy!”  This week, you danced with your whole heart, and sang even in the dark.

This week, you spoke new words, and pored over books new and already loved.

This week, you were thrilled to be simply walking along streets and sidewalks, mostly free of anyone telling you what to do or where to go.

This week, you learned to kiss, and kissed me right when I needed it most.

This week, you comforted yourself when you missed someone.  And you missed me when I didn’t think I’d be so missed.

This week, despite a recent phase of fears of abandonment, you went to daycare as you always do, with no fear, and with trust in your heart.

This week, you kept giving us those wonderful hugs, so tight and long and full of love.

This week, you often made me really laugh.

This week, you fell from a bicycle and wanted to get back on again.

Many things will change.  But I hope that, in your heart and soul, you’ll face and experience all the weeks of your life like this one, the first full week of the new year, when you were twenty-one-and-a-half months old.

Hang on for as long as you can.  It seems like yesterday when my stepson was 18 months old and riding naked on the back of an Irish Wolfhound.  At the end of the month he'll be 36, but the good part is his six-year-old will be there with him to help blow out all those candles.  ;-)

Hey guys,

Thanks for reading and commenting.  I am trying to savor these days, even though that's not always easy - there are, of course, difficult moments, too. I love this quote I heard somewhere: "The days are long, but the years are short".  That seems very true.  Luckily, there is the good stuff that makes those days worth it.

Gerald, it's funny you wrote that - the picture I chose is actually from September!  Julien keeps looking at it on my iPad in total fascination so I felt like it went well with the piece.

JMac - I am sooo jealous that your stepson rode naked on the back of an Irish wolfhound. That is awesome!  Our cat Ali is fascinated by Julien and will allow the occasional cuddle, but he's also getting increasingly wary as Julien's enthusiasm and curiosity often means rather rough pets, despite my interventions.

Seems a person needs to teach themselves to read but you can instill the love of reading in them.   Loved the first week!

The back of their neck, the perfect 'kissing spot'!

Hi Alysa!  Going thru your blog, and saw I missed the one about the 'lion'...that was great!  I also saw your comment over on my last post, thank you!  Still thinking of a reply there though, not sure where to go with my part of it, so just reading around.  How is your mom doing?

it's just lovely, and gave me such an ache i want a cigarette for the first time in two days. but i wont.  there will be no better days in your life, not even if he goes to harvard and marries a girl you approve of with all your heart and loves his job and everything is peachy - there is just no better time than this.  sending you a hug, and i know it is hard to be grateful all day long in the thick of parenting.

you gave us a lovely glimpse here of your julien.  thank you.

I love this, all the growing is wonderful. It reminds me of my own.
