In anyone's life they have done/caused to be done things that are good, bad and in between.  That most certainly can be said about Hugh Marston Hefner.

On one hand he was guilty of the objectifying women, but on the other, he was an advocate for women's reproductive, educational, employment and personal rights.

The area where he was quite vocal, and the reason I'm posting about him in a positive way, was his support of the LGBTQ community, LGBTQ rights and his unwavering support for same-sex marriage.

It had a HUUUUGE impact when one of our cultural icons of heterosexuality said,

“The fight for gay marriage is, in reality, a fight for all of our rights. Without it, we will turn back the sexual revolution and return to an earlier, puritanical time.

Today, in every instance of sexual rights falling under attack, you’ll find legislation forced into place by people who practice discrimination disguised as religious freedom.  Their goal is to dehumanize everyone’s sexuality and reduce us to using sex for the sole purpose of perpetuating our species. To that end, they will criminalize your entire sex life.”

He was equally as open about the threat of HIV/AIDS not being a "gay plague",

“The only thing ‘wrong’ with AIDS is the way our government responded to it. They are culpable on many, many levels.

I have chosen every aspect of human sexuality – and the discrimination that goes along with some of those aspects – as my major concern.  Homosexuality and, later, the homophobia that surrounds the AIDS crisis are part of a much bigger picture for me.”

So "bon voyage" and R.I.P., dude.  You were more than a bit of a perv, but at least you were honest about it.

Thanks for your support of my community and your support of a LOT of things that are important to me, such as LGBTQ rights, same-sex marriage, women's reproductive rights, homeless youths, the environment, etc.

P.S.  Say hi to Marilyn Monroe for me and tell her I always thought she was hot as hell.

Hugh Hefner’s enterprise and then both Hefner and Larry Flynt’s were at one time  seemingly the only platforms for progressive propaganda, for truth against fallacioUSnest$ of bigots, hypocrites and warmongers.

100%    For a 12 yr old boy, say, in 1963, he, along w Walt Disney, were perched, one on one shoulder, whispering, the other on the opposite shoulder, whispering.

Excellent piece.

Given his stances and comments, and commitments, this post comes as no surprise at all... We'll done!

Jon, your comment cracked me up.

Sex and bodies and desire, all so repressed back in the day, this guy certainly came along and shook things up. He was one of them, anyway. I've read articles this week similar to this one and then one in The Guardian where the woman declared he was a pimp. A mixed bag of opinion maybe like Hugh Hefner himself was.

His stance and support for all kindsa' openness about sex was so far ahead of his time - thanks for adding things he has said in support of LGBTQ rights. What I remember was how much more open and acceptable sex and bodies and desire became.... right as I hit puberty. Aaahhhh, we sure had fun back in the day, after the Pill and before AIDS.

RIP, Hugh Hefner.

...and I still have the letter I got from Playboy after sending them completely tame photos when 19 or so and they replied something like, "Well, you do look lovely in your turtleneck and maxi skirt, Ms. Naive, but maybe could we see some skin besides your face?"

I know he supported women's rights.

Hefner was definitely a mixed-bag. Yea! for promoting freedom from repression and equality. But the downside, of the Playboy "ethic" was that it ultimately reduced women to mere sexual objects to be exploited – and that too often led to the misogynistic attitude of pussy-grabbers like Trump.
