How about we play read, decipher, and interpret the look on the WHITE MAN'S face both before and after the exchange of slaps in this iconic scene from "In the Heat of the Night"...

Oh, and, yes, there was a time when for a substantial and significant percentage of the white population:

The Emancipation Proclamation was that slap in the face;

The 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments were that slap in the face;

Brown v Board of Ed was that slap in the face;

The Civil Rights, Voting Rights, and Fair Housing Acts were that slap in the face;

The appointment of Thurgood Marshal to the Supreme Court was that slap in the face;

The election of Barack Obama to two full terms as President of the United States was that slap in the face...

Currently, about one third of the white population carries both expressions of before and after that slap in the face intermittently....

If you can't see that, it's because you're one of them.

Ignorance ....then and now. Yet there  have always been people who knew better and stood against injustice. We have far more in common than those who profit from division proclaim. If only one third of the American population is ignorant today then this is an improvement. Certainly not a time to announce mission accomplished, but an improvement, none the less.

It takes far less effort to raise a nation of consumers than it does to create a nation of citizens.

"It takes far less effort to raise a nation of consumers than it does to create a nation of (thinking) citizens."

This is quotable as axiomatic per public education budgets across the country....

It takes a citizen to make a citizen...public education produces the product desired by those who run the system, not citizens. Citizens constantly challenge the status quo...from these challenges we all grow...beyond. The last era public education produced a generation of citizens ended in 1968. Those kids challenged every bit of the status quo...and got crushed. We have been spiraling downward ever since, back to a mindset  I only recognize from bad sci-fi readings.  Trusting the system to produce people who challenge that very system? Yea...that will happen.

I thought you might like these "simplified" definitions, Ron.  Maybe it will let some people "get it" better:

Ron, so sorry to always point out the sadness, but, it is 53% of Whites. Assholes, each and every one.

Or, as we call them here, Stupid Fucking Haoles

BTW, it isn't JUST white people who take pride in spreading the hate...

For example, there is this stupid bitch (and you KNOW I hate that word, but nothing else fits) at the Grammys in her "Build the Wall" dress and MAGA purse:

@MS; My reference is to the 30% of the white population that represent Trump's political 'base'...His most avid followers and supporters...

@RBJ; "...public education produces the product desired by those who run the system, not citizens...".

I remember that scene well. One of MLK’s biggest accomplishments was to take away the expectation that a slap could be given with impunity.
