The ultimate high school rumor encapsulated in a text received from my daughter just after I dropped her off at school this morning

I was wrong. The attendance lady is not dead.

There's a difference between "attending" and "in attendance".

For many students, and the 'attendance lady', that difference would have no meaning or consequence.

For many students it wouldn't matter whether she was alive or dead and for many keepers of attendance records it doesn't matter whether the students are attending classes or merely "in attendance".

Was it ever thus?

The beat goes on....

When you walk into her high school, there’s a front lobby between the outer doors and the locked doors to the school. In this lobby there are a pair of windows on the side and behind these windows sit two women in charge of attendance. If students are late, they sign in there. If a student leaves early, they’re signed out there. These two women are very visible to the students, many of whom interact with them often. For a variety of reasons, they know me on sight. One of them was absent for a few days which started a rumor.

In the case of this rumor, which is what the post is about, the difference between “attending” and “in attendance” has no meaning or consequence.
