The Illusion of Life

Life is an illusion
Made of disappointment and confusion
Some consider life a gift from God
Doctor Frankenstein's lightning rod,

We hang on with false hopes
Spending our lives learning the ropes
Our hearts pierced by love and betrayal
Emulating Hollywood portrayals,

The illusion we hope will give us happiness
As a man seeks to find his princess
A woman awaits her dashing groom
As disasters just over the horizon loom,

The false hopes we cultivate
Our dreams and aspirations that vacillate
Although promiscuity will only castrate
Broken marriages that continue to gravitate,

Around the quickly accumulating failures
While some of us appeal to a savior
Others continue the denial of futility
Perpetuating the narcissism of our vanity,

Life is an illusion
For some it becomes an untimely contusion
For others a celebration of achievement
Or a foray into the tragedy of bereavement,

Lonely and sad entities we become
Illusions bring a zero total outcome
Yet this we refuse to see
Ignoring icebergs dwelling just below the sea.
