If there is anything good to take away from the appalling tragedy in Toronto on Monday, it's the action -- or rather, non-action -- of one heroic patrol cop.

Const. Ken Lam, siren screaming, pulled his cruiser up near the rental van that had just run over more than 20 people, killing 10, in a mile-long rampage down Yonge Street sidewalks.

A man, later identified as Alek Minassian was standing next to it, shouting and holding something in his hand.

Lam got out of his vehicle, realized he couldn't hear the man, went back and shut the siren off.

Sidearm in hand, he cautiously approached Minassian and realized he was shouting "Kill me" and "Shoot me in the head" while repeatedly pointing what turned out to be a cellphone at him and advancing in a threatening manner.

Lam subsequently holstered his gun, pulled out his baton and calmly advanced. At which point Minassian dropped down and surrendered.

As a result, investigators now have a live suspect to interrogate, instead of another corpse.

At a time when police in Canada and elsewhere are (often rightly) accused of using lethal force indiscriminately, Const. Lam showed that intelligence and restraint can work.

This clip from the CBC shows what happened. And what didn't happen.

Minassian is white so the officer didn't "fear for his life".

I'm glad he didn't shoot. Far too many don't bother to suss the actual situation...

Are the Canadian police as racially skewed in enforcement as the American police?

I think Const. Ken Lam deserves praise for the restraint and professionalism he deserves in this situation, not some knee jerk response from south of his border which assumes he is racist and would have shot had the perpetrator been black.

I was being descriptive when I added the word "knee".

I've already seen a post on how mass murderers will always find a weapon.

@Kosh; "Are the Canadian police as racially skewed in enforcement as the American police?"

What kind of fucked up "racially skewed" question is that?

If he were a black man in America the greater likelihood is that he'd have been shot and killed.

If he were a Palestinian in Israel the greatest likelihood is that he'd have been shot and killed by an Israeli snipper from a distance or run over by an armored vehicle at considerably closer range.

What's interesting, if not ironic, is in this scenario the officer appears to be a person of color and the "suspect" is a white  man who behaved as though he wanted to commit suicide bt police gunfire.

The question should be how skewed are Canadian screening protocols and intelligence tests re fitness to wear a badge and carry a gun?

My guess is that the Canadian police would outscore and out perform American  cops by any measure on every level...

I seriously doubt that data could be found or conjured that would prove my hypothesis wrong......

By the way,  your 'question' does little more than beg the question here . Virtually every relevant study and statistic shows that there is severe racial bias in law enforcement procedures, policicies, a d protocols in the United State.

If racial bias were used as an indicator of lack of intelligence ,American cops would at or near the top of the chart....

Thus making your question both stupid and moot....

Or, to put it in the context of this post, absolutely, completly, and totally irrelevant

...not some knee jerk response from south of his border which assumes he is racist and would have shot had the perpetrator been black.

Funny how when numerous men around here say things like that you are silent and/or in agreement.  When a woman (especially me) says anything you routinely sneak in afterwards and write some snarky cheap shot.

Why is that, AKA?

Is it you don't want anyone to diss your fellow white supremacists, but are afraid other men will make you cry ala Chris Cantwell or is it because you are a misogynistic asshat who can't help but "teach" a woman her place?

Which is it, AKA?  I'm curious.

Back to the subject...  and KS' question...  I'd point out these little tidbits:

"According to a 2014 report issued Canada’s Correctional Investigator, between 2005 and 2015 Canada’s prison population grew by 10%.

During the same period, the number of black inmates grew by 69% and the number of Aboriginal inmates grew by 50%.

In fact, almost a quarter of Canada’s total prison population is Aboriginal, despite Aboriginal Canadians representing only 4.3% of the population, and the incarceration rate for black Canadians is “three times their representation rate in general society.”

There are also the well-known instances of black Canadians commonly being subjected to random police “carding” checks. Not to mention cases of police shooting black men like Andrew Loku and Jermaine Carby dead for no particular reason with the officers involved rarely facing subsequent disciplinary action."

What's that tell ya???

Amy, Canada should be proposing to build a wall to keep American racism out and make white Americans pay for it....

On the other hand, they'll be dealing with a crisis of racism of their own making soon enough....

It doesn't tell me anything Amy about the singular officer involved. The post is about that person.

In response, the stats cited certainly point to a severe issue Canadians need to address. The original poster has made note of that " At a time when police in Canada and elsewhere are (often rightly) accused of using lethal force indiscriminately, Const. Lam showed that intelligence and restraint can work."

As for the off the wall conjectures, they do not have any element of truth to them. I am neither a white supremacist nor a misogynist. Decent people do not make those allegations.

Decent people do not make those allegations.

Help me out here, AKA...

Is it "misogynistic, puritanical racist" or is it "racist, misogynistic puritan"???

P.S.  Sorry, for not noting your "Calvin wannabe" puritan credentials.  I'm sure you judge everyone else's "decency".  You just haven't had a chance to comment on their's, right?
