"After Black votes gave him his thin margin of victory in the 1948 election, Truman went silent on civil rights.

By the early 1950s, even liberal Black groups like the NAACP were denounced as subversive by Sen. Joe McCarthy's anti-communist campaigns.

By the mid-1950s, Black workers faced several bleak choices: support for the embattled Communist Party, whose commitment to Black struggle had never been consistent; following anti-communist union bureaucrats who promised to fight for Black rights, but delivered little; or joining with accommodationist Black middle-class leaders who placed their hopes in the racist Democratic Party.

Cut off from the tradition of militant struggle, a new generation of civil rights activists would be forced to rediscover radical politics on their own.

In the 1950s, socialism was affected by McCarthyism and in the 1960s it was revived by the general radicalization brought by the New Left and other social struggles and revolts. In the 1960s, Michael Harrington and other socialists were called to assist the Kennedy administration and then the Johnson administration's War on Poverty and Great Society[2] while socialists also played important roles in the Civil Rights Movement...

This point was not lost on racists, both in and out of the labor movement, who accused anyone opposed to Jim Crow segregation of being a "red."..."

--Paraphrased from Wikipedia materials

By the time Nixon was elected to his first term in 1968, Republican strategists had successfully color coded anyone associated with socialism as being in favor of taking sparse resources from deserving white people and giving/transferring them to undeserving black people...

Liberal Democrats were called Socialists who were pro black "n_lovers"...

People over the age of fifty should have no difficulty in recalling the overt racist attempts to associate the social safety net with the skin color of the recipients of any kind of government assistance...

To this day, the majority of those who comprise Trump's base believe that the "entittlements" that are components of the social safety net are little more than government giveaways to undeserving black and brown people, while the fact is that the overwhelming majority of the recipients of such benefits are white people....

The only valid and viable explanation for the phenomenon of white people voting against their own economic self-interests is that, for the hardcore Republican supporters and voters, racism 'Trumps' everything else...

True that. Only one trumper I have encountered proved otherwise...his TBIs and PTSD might be the root of it. I think he is in jail now. He goes in talking trump, and then wants to fight the racists in every bar...the racists mistake his trump loving broken brain as racist and respond to his right wing rants...he just can’t help but get his ass whooped, and locked up. He does well in jail...or so far has survived jail, he’s not so bad sober. Very interesting case.

This is very accurate herstorically, but, I need to point out that Truman actually initiated the equality we are finally starting to see as possible when he integrated the military. The blow-back was so strong that politically he quieted down- moral? NO. Realistic in a racist society about to explode (and in fact it would ten years later as our cities were on fire over redlining and police brutality)? YES. I doubt anyone else can see it, though maybe you can Ron, this is the reverse yet the same behavior of Obama ... hit hard then run and wait it out. You can call it cowardice, or, you can call it political reality in a RACIST USA and world full of white supremacy.

Thanks for this - I remember exactly the moment as a child I first heard my liberal Democrat mother called a n***** lover, I had no idea what that meant and it became a long dinner table discussion that night in 1967 Dallas, TX when I was 6. Once we moved to Georgia the next year I heard it plenty more over the years attributed to my mother.... but I'd never heard the word Socialist attached, as far as I recall. Just being a Liberal as a label was enough for the perjorative to be attached.

Later on it became 'bleeding heart' liberal she was called, I guess when the n word became 'less acceptable,' as if caring about others beyond your own was some sad, wussy, worth-sneering-at, way to be.

Executive Order 9981 is an executive order issued on July 26, 1948, by President Harry S. Truman. It abolished discrimination "on the basis of race, color, religion or national origin" in the United States Armed Forces. The executive order eventually led to the end of segregation in the services.

Most of the actual enforcement of the order was accomplished by President Dwight D. Eisenhower's administration (1953–1961), including the desegregation of military schools, hospitals, and bases. The last of the all-black units in the United States militarywas abolished in September 1954.[6]

Anna, Back then "n****r lover" was the blanket epithet/label hurled at any and every white person who would associate or align himself/herself with black people on any level and for any purpose whatsoever...
