Take Me To the River, Wash Me In the Water

I can't tell you why or how and sometimes even what I create.  my husband came into the studio a little earlier and asked me what this painting was and I answered, "I don't know, but there's a title - Take Me To the River, Wash Me In the Water".  I know this because the song has been playing over and over as I paint as if I'm explaining the song to myself.

Is it about faith or God? - I don't know. For me whatever God there is, is in music and art, the poetry we are lucky enough to channel.

a painting comes to me as it comes. sometimes as this one did, with a name.  it's in oils and I'm using iridescent colors which are very difficult to photograph as the light reflects and distorts and collides.  So what you're seeing is about half the color.  I could probably take pictures of sections so you get the idea but right now this will do.  it IS a bit cray. but overall (if I say so myself) it's much stronger - very dramatic, lots of contrast and the color is lush.

Take Me To The River

lyrics by Al Green

I don't know why I love you like I do
After all these changes that you put me through
You stole my money and my cigarettes
And I haven't seen hide nor hair of you yet

I wanna know
Won't you tell me
Am I in love to stay?
Hey hey
Take me to the river
And wash me down
Won't you cleanse my soul
Put my feet on the ground

I don't know why she treated me so bad
After all the things that we could have had
Love is a notion that I can't forget
My sweet sixteen I will never regret

I wanna know
Won't you tell me
Am I in love to stay?
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

Hold me, love me, please me, tease me
Till I can't, till I can't take no more
Take me to the river

I don't know why I love you like I do
After all the things that you put me through
The sixteen candles burning on my wall
Turning me into the biggest fool of them all

I wanna know
Oh won't you tell me
Am I in love to stay?

I wanna know
Take me to the river
I wanna know
I want you to dip me in the water
I wanna know
Won't you wash me in the water
Wash me in the water
Wash me in the water
Won't you wash me in the water
Feeling good

Oh, there's a lot there, Monkey. The kind of painting I'd love to stand with a friend and see what it evokes from minute to minute while staring.... okay, but maybe skip Amy standing next to me as I don't see that at all!!!!  HA!  And I can already picture the comment being said while I spew tea (I'm always holding a cup of tea) all over your artwork laughing at her nonsense  ; )

My first thought went toward small mind. big mind. or monkey mind/wisdom thing going on (not foolish monkey mind, but 'monkey' mind... which book or person was that who got into that concept of the monkey mind??) ....

I like the colors, too, rich jewel tones, gloss, thick paint  : )

I heat that song and I'm back in the bar shooting pool (circa ages ago)....

very good memories attached to that song.

I just switched images.  Shut off all the lights in the studio and used natural light.  I think it's about as good as I'm going to get with wet oils and the iridescents.
