In 1919 William Butler Yeats published one of the most beautifully disturbing and one of the most anthologized poems in my ken.  The opening lines of “The Second Coming” seem prophetic in their aptness for today.:

    Turning and turning in the widening gyre
    The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
    Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
    The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
    The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
    The best lack all conviction, while the worst
    Are full of passionate intensity.”

The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity.

 “Surely some revelation is at hand;
    Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
    The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
    When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
    Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand;
    A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
    A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
    Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
    Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.

    The darkness drops again but now I know
    That twenty centuries of stony sleep
    Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
    And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
    Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?”

…A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun…

…And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, slouches toward Bethlehem to be born?

The Beast 45 appears to have been imagined a century before it appeared.

Apparently written about WWI, the lines, unfortunately, seem timeless.

Kosh, pitching the truth doesn't seem to work anymore.  It could work if you made the truth sound/look like a lie....

Cynical but true.

Pitching the truth doesn't work because the arbiters of truth are now for sale. It's not a question of believing in trickle up, it's a question of understanding it.

All you have to really have to know to understand it is that business expansion is driven by demand. If the general population has money, they spend it, and when current businesses can't keep up or can see more ways to make money, they expand and make more money. Rich people get richer with more middle class buying from their investments. There is nothing contested here.

I look at it more from the standpoint: what if I were the politician?  Would I be able win a campaign and stay in office if I adhered only to my constituency, or to my conscience?  I think this is a more honest way to go about answering the question with less self-righteousness.

The other factor is that our form of government in adversarial in nature.  The adjunct to this is finding a form of government where that is not true, and that's how you wind up with totalitarian regimes, and Donald Trump.

Ben Sen, non-adversarial forms of government can be consensus governments.  Consensus is a slow, laborious, messy process, but in the end everyone is on-board.  With democracy 49% can end up being very unhappy.  I don't think consensus can take place at a much higher level than a village and that's how we get to the partial tyranny of a democracy or the absolute tyranny of totalitarian governments.  Bicameral forms of government are a compromise.  I like the parliamentary multi-party system where coalitions have to form, but that only happens when there is no majority party.  When there is a majority it reverts to the majority party and everyone else.
