Staring Into the Maw of a Monster Hurricane

Along with millions of people in Florida and the Southeast I am worried about Irma.  The latest models show the track of the giant storm shifting to the west indicating that it will go directly up the Florida peninsula into Georgia with the potential to cause damage in Atlanta and beyond.

We are in the middle of beyond.

Irma

We were all right until meteorologists introduced something called the European model.  It supposedly predicts the paths of hurricanes slightly better than the model meteorologists usually use. I wonder why they don’t use the European model all of the time.

We are supposed to travel Monday for my every three month cancer checkup and we received a call from Durham, six hours north and east advising us to bring bottled water and food that does not need to be cooked.  No one knows.  Everyone is edgy.

I am having déjà vu.  In 1989 I watched with clinical detachment as meteorologists talked of another giant storm called Hugo.  As Hugo bore down on Charleston, South Carolina I thought, “Poor Charleston”.  Living 250 miles inland I went to bed wondering what Charleston would look like in the morning.  Sometime during the night the wind picked up, turned to a roar, stopped, and then started back.

We awoke to downed trees and no power.  Hugo was still a category one Hurricane when the eye passed over us.

Now we are looking at a Hurricane that may cause enormous injury and  damage and lose little power as it passes over Florida which is apparently still very hot and wet.

I have friends on both coasts of Florida in Tampa and St. Augustine.  They could face real devastation.

We have an enormous oak that leans over our house that I treasure for its age and shade.  If it falls it will cut our house in two.

I don’t know where to run.  Hotel/motel rooms are booked all over North Georgia and Western North Carolina by Floridians.  Damn Floridians.

Damn those European models, too. Didn’t Melania Trump have something to do with Hurricane Harvey?

Or, was Hurricane Harvey caused by Michelle Obama’s bare shoulders or something in Hillary’s email?

Seriously, two major hurricanes and the hurricane season is not over.

This isn’t like Dylan’s World War Three Blues where he offered to let me be in his dream if he could be in mine.  As Jimmy Buffet sand, there is no way to reason with hurricane season.

ok,i read a lil deeper into it and the theory is that even a nuke wouldn't have enuff effect.......tho i wouldn't use a nuke for something like this anyway....tho it's thought a nuke in it's might alter the course.....i still say try a MOAB in the eye and prove 'experts' right or wrong......keep yer head down,Rod,good luck....

We left before the storm hi to drive to Durham. Talked to the neighbor today and found out the house is OK, no power, and 4 trees are down. One is across the drive. It could be so much worse. Oh, the big oak is OK.
