SodaStream Halts West Bank Production

SodaStream, an Israeli company that has had a production facility in a West Bank settlement, has ceased West Bank production as of about a month ago. The plant should be closed entirely during the third quarter. Whether the move is a direct result of boycotts is an open question - company officials say it isn't, but others, including some Israeli sources, say it is. The company claims that consolidating production in one plant inside Israel will save them money.

The plant had 500 Palestinian employees, 450 Israeli Arab employees, and 350 Jewish Israeli employees. The factory was noted for being one of the few facilities where Israelis and Palestinians worked side by side in large numbers, for being the West Bank's largest private employer, and for paying Palestinian employees way higher wages than the Weat Bank average (three to five times higher, depending on who you ask).

The company is attempting to get work permits inside Israel for its Palestinian employees but I have not found a source that updates this information, which is probably still in process so there may be nothing to update.

That could be a sociological disaster..."one of the few facilities where Israelis and Palestinians worked side by side in large numbers'' of the only spaces of being

where people of different backgrounds get a new , evolving ''background'' of reality, a potentially friendly, tolerant one where differences can be joked about..

it was with the rise of the proleteriat class, that mighty melting pot,

that came the revolutions that shaped the last two centuries.

The French Revolution, i once read, has never been decided...

Did you ever read that?

(off topic, sorry)

Are Palestinians racially related closely to Israelites?

Cousins, in other words?

Just wondering.

It's like some big   literary masterpiece...but REAL...this squabble among cousins...

Genetically, yes, though not all genetics are closely shared because of European intermarrying and such. Culturally, less so, though then we get into religion, which are both more and less related than one would assume at first glance.

Sorry about your last comment. Context no longer exists. Arthur and I still have unresolved issues.

Sociological disaster? More like sociological setback. Also economic setback - that's a lot of high paying Palestinian jobs gone if the permits aren't forthcoming.

If there is any plausible reconciliation between Palestinians and Israelis it is rooted in commerce.  Tom Robbins wrote about this in his 1990 novel Skinny Legs and All. It's always been one of my favorites.

Please keep us informed.  R&L ;-)

Reconciliation is up to you.

I don't insult you.
I don't accuse you of being a spy of some sort
I don't accuse you of deleting things you don't delete
I don't accuse you of screwing up the server or otherwise messing up your technical experience (squares)
I don't accuse you of being duplicitous/dishonest
I don't say bad things about you on ther blogs when you are not there and not the topic of discussion
I don't make up your history saying you had email conversations with people you don't even know
I don't endorse organizations that hate people like you

You have done all of those to me, most of them unprovoked, some of them in this thread,
And you wonder why I have a problem with you.

Well now I do have a problem with you,
But that's not on me. It's on you.

If you want to fix it, fine.

If you don't, stay the Hell off my blog.
