Single Sentence Saturday: An observation about conservatives and race

What strikes me most when talking to conservatives about race is how adamantly they deny any White responsibility for bad race relations.

Denial of the truth is a manifestation and a marker of white privilege....

Comment by Tom Cordle on October 27, 2018 at 7:23am

That denial is a by-product of the larger problem – the failure to comprehend, or at least acknowledge, that one's lot in life is to a large extent a result of an accident of birth. One should be no more proud of the color of their skin, than of the color of their eyes or hair, but that obvious truth escapes those with an inflated opinion of themselves and their "race". These folks are either ignorant or willfully blind to the fact that Muslims were foremost in intellectual pursuits for centuries, while the West wallowed in the Dark Ages.

This delusion akin to that of the self-made man; as I've often said, the self-made man has a fool fro a maker. As with much else negative, this failure is embodied in tRump, who apparently sees himself as a self-made man, despite the yuuuge advantages he began life with thanks to a mere accident of birth.

I couldn’t agree more. I once wrote a post about self-made men which I recently reposted on another site, pointing out how self-made is bullshit.

It’s not only a marker of White privilege, it’s a marker of something else. Sorry to use gender stereotypes here but I think it would work well with a conservative audience: Real men take responsibility. Frantically avoiding responsibility is not the sign of a real man, which is kind of ironic because I think that stereotype is way more important to men who apparently aren’t.

without white fear...where would they be? Hate, fear and some sort of programmed belief that their race and religion are superior. That’s all they need to circle their wagons and start shooting at anything that moves.

Lets stick to the USA and so called Republicans, despite this being a global issue this is where we intersect with it, though I must tell you the difference between Hawaii and the Mainland is dramatic.

Whites are cowards on race. Holder was right when he said it, and he was right again last week when he said to kick low.

There is no Party of Lincoln. After opposing the New Deal, when the War ended Truman integrated the Military. Since then the Repukes have been on a single minded quest to rid the party of all blacks, fake out and scam poor and stupid and uneducated whites, and oppose Civil Rights for all, all while claiming to be Christians.

I can go on for hours, but, I will simply say it again. The lies of the truth of what happened during Reconstruction and the Nadir are designed to protect both White Privilege and prolong the fairy tale. The reason at the top is of course control, power, money and authority. At the bottom it is FEAR of the truth. The "Average White Man" (notice how they are Trump's base?) is scared to death of revenge. They actually think we will come for them, because, stupid as many are, many more know exactly what happened and continues to with the Prison Industrial System, stop and frisk, etc. The TRUTH is no one gives a shit about them, and that actually bugs them too, which says quite a bit in itself.

This false notion of superiority has its roots in a speech given by Pope Urban II in the year 1095. That speech was the clarion call to engage in a 'Crusade' to wrest control of the Holy Land from the Muslims who were characterized in that speech as an inferior race of people marked by their dark skin...

It can be argued that the Crusades began and continued for centuries as a race war initiated by the .Catholic Church at the Council of Clermont on 27 November 1095, the date of the speech given by Pope Urban II...

Ron- That is Act 1, Act 2 begins in the early 1600's as harsh treatment of both slaves (African, Indigenous, and on occasion others) and indentured servants by the scumbag Cavaliers and other English assholes who enjoy the rights of the "Good" King's Charters put down rebellions seeking better working conditions. Initially, the Natives, Africans and mainly English and Irish Whites are separated not by Race, as though the history of the Evil Urban is a true one and the Crusades a debacle of large proportions, but by religion as that is what they overseers first observe as the divide and conquer method.

This, however, proves not as effective as separation by melanin, and so the dawn of the USA begins as a notion of a White Race begins to include not just English, but also Irish, Scandinavian, Germanic, etc., all of whom prior to that self-described as members of their OWN tribe.

And now here we are, 4 centuries of lies, hate, whips, chains, lynching and rape later- Welcome To Trump's AmeriKKKa

Racists have long since shed any tendency for empathy  beyond their own ID group(s).

At the risk of sounding like an apologist for racists, Maui Surfer's point that while Republicans are conservatives, not all conservatives are Republicans.  Likewise, not all Republicans are racists and not all racists are conservatives or Republicans.  Stereotypes of all types are fraught with danger.

Racist white Republicans deny any responsibility for problems with race relations because demonizing "outsider" groups is part of their innate mental process.  It produces the most outrageous and outlandish claims; like black people were happier when they were slaves.  To admit responsibility would involve a basic difference in the way the see the world in general.

@Tom Cordle:  your comments about privilege were made clear in a college sociology course, "Race Relations", that I took in the early 1960s in Arkansas.  You should have heard the white students in the class groan when Dr. Merrill asserted that none of us are self-made, we are the product of the advantages of our birth, our life experiences, our parent's willingness to sacrifice, our parent's ability to make that sacrifice, our advantage at almost every turn compared to minorities.

Conservative white kids knew what to answer on a test, but they rejected the hypothesis completely.  They wanted to believe the myths.

I would like to know what campus life is like now at my alma mater.  The enrollement is 3 times what it was then, and instead of having 3 black students our of a total of 3000 the mix today looks like a cross section of America.  There are even Hawaiian Islanders and Native Americans there, say nothing of Hispanics and African Americans.

Knowing what I do about concepts like microaggression I wonder if race is even discussed now.

At this point not all Republicans are racists. In fact, despite his ineptitude, you can't honestly say George Bush was a racist. His close circle included Rice, Powell, Gonzales and others, he had been an owner of a baseball team that was in large part minority players, he was an idiot, got suckered by President Cheney to the max, but did not wake up in the morning hating blacks.

But, with very few exceptions, and there are always some so that is freely admitted, nearly every US Racist is a Republican. Further, it is a lie and disingenuous to pretend the party has not actively pushed out minorities while courting poor whites (The Dixiecrat supporters and now the Trump Scum among others) since Truman integrated the Military, something they simply could not stand for as most are haters to the core, despite the occasional Bush. Haldeman admitted Nixon's Drug Laws were designed to attack blacks and browns, and anyone else they didn't like such as so called hippies. The deathbed confession of Atwater says it all, Haldeman brings home the facts like bacon, and the founder of the modern movement, Buckley, a Southerner, admitted in his National Review that, "American Politics is the South's REVENGE for the Civil War (beatdown)" This is all so well documented it simply must be Fake News.
