Scientists Worry World May Be Running Out of Sand

Scientists Worry World May Be Running Out of Sand:  While most people assume sand is an infinite resource, a just published prospectus cautions that the over-exploitation of global supplies of sand - mostly for use as construction materials, could wreak both political and environmental havoc.

I’m not one bit surprised.  I suspected sand was becoming a valuable commodity after I went to the beach a while back and a guy with a gravelly voice comes up to me and asks if he can have some of the sand between my toes.  I tell him “sure pal, but what’s lodged inside my bathing suit is off limits.”

One thing’s for sure, sand is not a subject that can just be swept under the rug.  I mean, I have a cat I’m responsible for.  What’s to become of his litter box?  I have enough things to fret about without having to worry about crap like that.  Sure, friends try and reassure me, saying they doubt the world will ever be in a state where we won’t even have sand for litter boxes and to worry about it is like getting into a sand trap, but I quickly remind them that nothing is ever written in cement.

This is really a thing. I've read about it. When you build a high rise, it takes a huge amount of sand for cement.

For some reason they haven't been concentrating there, at least to my knowledge. They've used beaches, which is a problem.

The study looked at various areas around the world where they mine sand commercially.  In Vietnam for example, a minister there said that they are expected to run out of sand by early 2020.  SAnd not only is used in construction projects, but also in the manufacture of things such as glass.  We use enormous quantities of the stuff globally.  They also showed an area in China where its being mined and there was a dramatic difference in the landscape after the mining.  I realize there is tons of the stuff in certain areas, but those who study this, say its an issue.  Anyway, that's all I have to say on the issue as I'm heading to the beach (lol).

Perhaps this is an environmentally less damaging way for the Saudis to stay rich

Hee - excellent idea.  It'd be almost unfair if they went from sitting on a fortune in oil to sitting on a fortune in sand wouldn't it?
