My Life on Independence Day

Almost took my life today
But it wasn't mine to take anyway
It's Independence Day
And the fools came out to play,

Turning water into brine
The evil of the idol's shrine
Robbing your freedoms and mine
It's all by foolish design,

I would never make that mistake again
Trusting a lover as a friend
Looking back maybe I did pretend
The truth you can never bend,

Where are all those shiney dreams?
Where hope still grows or so it seems
Once I saw your smile gleam
Seems all lost in a laser beam,

It was Independence Day
For a nation that used to pray
Where patriotism would never sway
Almost took my life today,

Everything's gone astray
A cowboy bleeds where he lays
You better watch what you say
Speech causes funny things these days,

It's Independence Day
And they line up to get into the fray
Wisdom gone to our dismay
Forgive me if I don't stay,

It wasn't my life to take
So I didn't for goodness sake
But our nation is at stake
Is that fire in the lake?

Independence Day and I'm hanging on
Even though it seems all the truth is gone
Maybe light a firecracker on the lawn
Get some sleep before the dawn,

Almost took my life today
But it wasn't mine to take anyway
It's Independence Day
And the fools came out to play.
