You heard me. Put it down. I don’t care if it says “LGBTs for Trump.” An audience member at that Greeley, Colorado rally held it and you took it and paraded around the stage with it. You have no right to touch the rainbow flag.
You’re not pro-queer or pro-trans. You’re not my friend.
Perhaps it was a Halloween joke. Is that it, Donald? Were you actually mocking my community? That’s easier for me to believe than that you, in any way, shape or form, care about my community.
Let’s look at your record on LGBT issues. Concerning gay marriage, you told Bill O’Reilly on Fox News, “I just don’t feel good about it. I don’t feel right about it. I’m against it, and I take a lot of heat because I come from New York. You know, for New York it’s like, how can you be against gay marriage? But I’m opposed to gay marriage.” That's pretty clear.
You supported North Carolina’s anti-transgender bathroom law. And the misnamed First Amendment Defense Act, which allows bigoted religious people to use their so-called moral convictions to discriminate against LGBT people.
Even when you seem pro-LGBT, I have to wonder. You said that you “will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens from the violence and oppression of a hateful foreign ideology.” Didn’t you mean that as another attack on people overseas you don’t like? Why didn’t you simply say that you would protect us from the hateful ideology of homophobes and transphobes right HERE in this country. Right in your own party, which has one of most virulently anti-gay and anti-trans platforms in this nation’s history. Right here in the many Christian churches that promote bigotry every day of the year.
Why look to another country when violence, oppression and hateful ideology are right here in our own backyard? Do you know that queer and trans people are still murdered in this country because of who we are? Do you realize that? Do you care?
Then there’s your choice of a running mate. Cut me a break. Indiana Governor Mike Pence has a long track record of opposing LGBT rights. I’m sure he wasn’t happy that you were waving a rainbow flag. Or was he in on the joke?
Pence not only supported a constitutional amendment barring gay marriage, but he also signed a law to jail queer couples for even applying for a marriage license. He supports conversion therapy to try and change a person’s sexual orientation. He opposed lifting “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.” There’s much, much more, but you get the point.
So put down the flag, Trump, and never pick it up again. Not that I’m a big fan of flags, but this one is special for one reason: Gilbert Baker designed it at the request of Harvey Milk. Do you know who he is? Google his name. He was a great man.
