I started off the day with an early e-mail to my friends, remarking on the callousness of the stooge daughter Ivanka, in her trademarked goofy fake smile dedicating a plaque to her daddy who is the "President of the United States on America", while dozens are being killed outside the ceremony and hundreds more injured.

Somewhere between the reneging of the Iran nuclear deal and the placement of a US Embassy in Jerusalem we find ourselves at the mercy of those who would start WWIII without concern.

My Jewish friend in the email chain had this to say:

"I have to say...they have caused more damage than they know. Netanyahu is no different than a war criminal.....The Palestinians need a homeland, a sovereign state, a capital and peace. Israel needs to marshal it's resources and talent , and participate in a peace process...2 state...Netanyahu's constituency is a bunch of hardline, right wing, fundamentalist Jewish extremists who believe the Messiah is actually on his way...and everyone else is a heathen. These are the same assholes ( lot's of whom immigrate from Chicago, NY and LA)...carry machine guns, pray all day, don't work, have a ton of kids, get welfare,  and cause all manner of trouble.

Jews rely on the Holocaust and declare "never again"... And that's fine ...But the Palestinians should not be subjected to an apartheid occupation by the military. Which is the current status. Trump has just made things much much worse..."

I admit to not having a 3 day supply of water, canned soup, some flashlights and pillows or whatever it is that is deemed essential in case of a disaster. The wood door to the basement is easy enough to kick in and stopping the marauding hordes in the last hours seems to be a more energetic response than I could muster.

In fact, this mess is making me is making me wonder why the Hawaiians are running away from the lava.

I agree with most of what your friend had to say. I differ on a couple of points, but not the central one. I can think of no good reason to authorize the use of live ammunition against rioters in Gaza. It would be one thing if there were gunfire coming from Gaza but instead what there is is a bunch of people throwing things and I haven’t heard of IDF casualties up to this point. At Kent State, there were students throwing things. And in spite of the fact that I don’t think the rest of the world has a say in what Israel calls its capital (and the facility used overlaps into what was no-mans’ land between the Israeli and Jordanian borders from 1948 to 1967, not into East Jerusalem), opening that facility on the anniversary of the Nabka was unbelievable insanity, a completely pointless provocation that indicates that either the State Department has no one left who understands the Middle East or, just as likely, Trump doesn’t listen to the experts he might have left.

I absolutely agree with your friend’s assessment of Netanyahu’s coalition allies. This may sound strange but as a Jew I find them religiously repugnant, proud of their adherence to procedural details while missing the moral center those details were designed to support.

Thanks for writing.

I could never catch up with the history enough to debate anyone.

His writing is often overly glib but I know he is heartfelt about it, having lost many ancestors in WWII.

And, a comment that was removed from the official WH "transcript" of Kushner's speech just threw gasoline on the trumpster fire. As I said to Jon, these are not smart people. Just greedy, mendacious grifters.

Anyway, here's what Tom Lehrer had to say about World War III in 1965. Nothing much has changed -- just insert the name of a new "enemy":

I’m afraid that’s an occupational hazard, so to speak. Over 90% of American Jewish ancestry is from areas Hitler got to in one way or another. Poland, Russia, Belarus, the Baltic states, Ukraine, Rumania, Hungary, Germany, Austria. Families didn’t all come at once, so most people still had family over there. My last family out left Poland in August of 1939. One great aunt got sent back from Ellis Island for health reasons - she couldn’t pass the physical exam, something to do with her eyes. That rejection proved fatal.

Unless it comes up I’m not going to get involved in my disagreements with your friend.

Thank you, Boanerges.

"When the war is over, an hour and a half from now".

What a line.

My guess k/s, is that he would enjoy a detailed discussion with you. Agreement would not be a prerequisite nor is it what makes life interesting when conducted in a civil manner.

Perhaps because of being a post-war baby, and then not being quite old enough to appreciate the frightening aspects of the Cuban missile crisis, I never felt truly personally in danger of war on our own country's soil.
Not even the events of 9/11, which I experienced from just under 75 miles away, and knew many, many people directly impacted by those events, gave me the same sense of imminent danger I feel every day now.
I want it to stop, but it feels as though we are hurtling along a path, and looking at peace and safety in the rear view mirror.
What absolutely boggles my mind is that the current GOP continues to allow this. What in the name of all that is decent, honorable, reasonable, moral and ethical is wrong with the people who could make this all stop?
I guess I've answered my own question.
Just want to add, if the outcome of all this is as horrible as It may well be, then I don't want to be here in the afterward.
I have no wish to survive the apocalypse. Mad Max can keep it.

Sentiments understood, Rosi.

This afternoon's buzz is that the Korean summit idea is breaking down before it even happens.

It's going to take a hell of a lot more than Barbie and Ken to get the Very White House in order.

"Mendacious grifters" as Boanerges has said here earlier.

Yes, I saw that in the news, and of course, not surprised at all. And I agree with Boanerges' description.
I'm gonna go paint now.

It doesn't sound strange for a Jew to be against the mass slaughter of unarmed protesters.  It sounds like self-preservation to me given how much hatred toward Jews it will inspire. The question now is really how many Palestinians are going to be slaughtered this time and whether it will wake up a few more enablers of Israeli genocide.
