Besides taking some money & leaving some money at the Poker tables in 1990; my late husband was a contestant on Donald Trump's TV Game Show "Trump Card" during Atlantic City's gambling heyday.
"3 contestants try to answer questions of general knowledge to fill up a 15 square Bingo card".
The show lasted 1 year with 250 episodes & was hosted by omg-handsome Jimmy Cefalo, Miami Dolphins former wide receiver, news & sports broadcaster, talk radio show host, journalist & voice of the Miami Dolphins.
"From the spectacular Trump Castle in world famous Atlantic City, it's time to play Television's non-stop game of knowledge...TRUMP CARD. And now - here's the star of Trump Card...Jimmy Cefalo"!
Around that time, my husband was also a contestant on another TV Game Show, "Sale of the Century" - but was really after "Jeopardy" - the gold standard - but he was very close.
He normally wasn't a braggart about his accumulation of general knowledge of this & that & must've been a burden carrying it around.
I, on the other hand, do not have that burden! ha ha
I also was never the kind of wife who would say, "Hey, you should go on that show" - it was solely his idea to sign up - I was just along for the ride.
I remember it was very exciting being in the audience of this taped show rooting him on & hoping he wouldn't tell too many personal anecdotes - just because they could use some juicy chatter to liven-up the ratings.
But, when I heard the rousing opening theme music; I got chills & my heart skipped a beat...it's not every day you try to beat the odds & remember to breathe.
And, yes - I watched him win a couple thousand dollars which is long gone - but it's better than his other show where he brought home a year's supply of Ragu Sauce (and a little money) & to this day - have to explain the fragrant stain on the wallpaper!
I didn't think about the connection to Trump until just now - as the show wasn't about him; even though it was televised from his hotel - "Trump's Castle", later called "Trump Marina" & then "Golden Nugget" - who knows...maybe it's now a parking lot.
In this 27 year old video; you see Donald Trump showing up for the premier of his namesake game show - but he never appeared on any later shows - ever.
As he is wont to do; he just slapped his name on it & was hoping to be a stepping stone to deals around the idea of it & didn't hit it big until "The Apprentice".
The whole season they promoted the Tournament of Champions win of $100,000; but in the end - never gave it away. Does any of that ring a bell?
This American Syndicated show was based on the British Game Show "Bob's Full House". Looking up the credits now - Trump's name was not shown as Producer, Director or idea man in any capacity. I guess he knows better to brag about a flop.
(I never like to use that word "flop" because everything has merit - and I know personally that blood, sweat & tears go into all endeavors - but in this case, too much competition in this genre at the same time - but they did use this term in the on-line write-up of the show)
As for today - our new leader - came in for the Premier Show (the Inauguration) & is still promising that elusive $100,000!
