One Sentence Wednesday: The most important unwritten campaign promise Trump kept

The unwritten campaign promise that Trump has kept to the letter has been the maintaining and displaying of profound disrespect for the Washington establishment, a promise of visceral importance to his supporters.

So do you think the "Washington establishment" deserves any respect?

Excellent question.

I think some of the conventions of the Washington establishment deserve respect, as they’re there for very good reasons. One is maintaining a staff of international experts at the State Department. Another is not bringing your business life to the Presidency. A third is exercising some restraint when it comes to public communications, as the world is listening and the world is taking these seriously. A fourth, as I’ve already alluded to with the State Department and you illustrated in your Canada post, is putting actual experts in cabinet positions, more like JFK did with his “the best and the brightest.” Not all Presidents have followed the fourth, but none has been so far from that standard as Trump. A fifth, also related, is showing some respect for actual data.

Everything you described in your comment isn't what I consider to be the "Washington establishment".

To me, the Washington establishment" is career bureaucrats who will gladly screw over the public to gain a bit more power; it is Jeff Sessions going to be the Attorney General after 20 years in Congress; it is using "Executive Privilege" to hide reprehensible acts; it is having a Congress made up almost exclusively by 1%-ers; it is the influence that lobbyists and PACs have that voters no longer have; etc., etc., etc.

However, the practices I outlined came straight out of the Washington Establishment, particularly before the public sector was so relentlessly portrayed as bureaucratic and incompetent and as inferior in every way to the private sector, which it certainly is not. What’s wrong with Washington is mostly its privatization, which is absolutely not what Trump is attacking. He’s essentially replacing the original Washington Establishment with the Wall Street Establishment, accelerating a process already well under way.

"maintaining and displaying of profound disrespect" ... for the American people.

That’s not what he promised but it’s certainly what he does.

"maintaining and displaying of profound disrespect" ... for the American people.

He didn't need to "promise" that, he was DOING IT all through the campaign....

He didn’t promise that. He promised that for the government, for the Washington establishment. He just showed that. And still does.

The two most important words here are "his supporters" --- for the ad nauseumth time, approx. half of American whites are noxious haters, total saps, credulous fools, jealous freaks, one-born-every-minute suckers and, in all, a true basket of deplorables.

Everything they say and think is either nonsense, pure crap, Russian Active Measures regurgitated, nostalgia for a time when "they" were told they were superior, a very short time really too overall that is well documented easily simply by the last fifty years of US television programming, and mostly just plain envy that those in power were either born into Ivy League legacies like JFK, or out performed everyone in sight with pure talent and savvy like our former Hawaiian Fearless Leader.

Then, there are those who are inexplicable, the "college educated" who despite having some cursory knowledge of the world still either, or, or both, yearn for a time when their group was favored for no good reason.
