On a Mattress of Dreams

Escaping the world from a mattress of dreams

No more pain from waking day schemes

Suspended within space and time it seems

Enveloped in a dark sphere so serene,

Asylum comes in the thick of the night

Numbing the pain of reality’s light

Transcending time a world out of sight

Unconsciousness becomes an answer to my plight,

Tumbling down a shaft that time forgot

Suddenly it no longer matters that I lost a lot

Sanctuary from pain can never be bought

It all becomes a mystery like a secret plot,

In this black hole from which light cannot escape

Darkness as my mind closes the drapes

On a world of injustice and sour grapes

Secrets concealed within alien landscapes,

To the outer reaches it seems I’ve gone

While the outside world churns on and on

Where lovers leave and tears run dry at dawn

From a mattress of dreams I’m no longer a pawn

In my dreams you would never leave

A lost love that might be retrieved

Dreams grant me a fateful reprieve

For a slumbering moment I can believe,

A prelude to the afterlife it all could be

A zone of freedom and fantasy

Untouched by a world of sad reality

On a mattress of dreams I’m finally free.
