Curtis left a big Impression, including a song considered one of the top ten of all time: "People Get Ready". Get ready, indeed, 'cause there is a train a-comin', and it ain't headed to Glory.

Tom Cordle,

Take a look at this tuning Mayfield used on "People Get Ready". The names of the notes are at 2:20 or so into the video. This guy is a really good teacher. I've seen him demystify all sorts of styles.

AKA Thanks for the link. I had heard that Curtis used open F# tuning because he was self-taught and just tuned his guitar to the piano. He might have picked that up from Irving Berlin, who also only played in F#, and believe it or not rigged up some sort of capo on his piano to play in other keys. Richie Havens also used open tuning more or less exclusively. Keith Richards does a lot with open G and only five strings. Seasick Steve does some great slide stuff with only 3 strings. I played with a guy who was missing a couple of fingers on his left hand and tuned to G# or Gm, I can't remember which. The bitch was trying to figure out the changes when he was playing. My sister tunes oddly, as well, and then makes up her own chords.  I sometimes use a modified capo that gives me open A and I partial capo on fret 2 to get Drop D.
