A security guard, in the casino where I play poker, stepped around a man who was having chest pains, passed a woman who was missing her pocketbook, and
ignored an abandoned package that was making strange hissing noises, in order to dutifully announce to me that I was in a no smoking zone.

The cigarette I was carrying wasn't lit.

It's always been a hard life for us addicts.  ;-(

How dare you? (!!!) Don't you know tobacco is the ultimate evil?

You guys might be missing my point.

Casinos, malls, movie theaters, etc have no smoking signs posted everywhere and security personnel who are our first line of defense against the mass murderer with an automatic rifle and terrorists with bags and suitcases full of explosives.

The security people are supposed to be the eyes and ears of law enforcement. They're the early warning system we rely on for our safety and 'security' in open, public, spaces and places.

But, look at them and what they think they're there to watch for and go after.

None of these people are given any kind of training. None are screened in any meaningful way. None are paid much more than the minimum wage.

Most don't have sufficient mental acuity to distinguish between the nature of their responsibilities and the degree of 'authority' they believe that they have.

Cop wannabes trying to act as law enforcement operatives until the shit hits the fan. When that happens you'd be hard put to beat them to the exits.

So, unless the wild-eyed gunman or the murderous terrorist cell come in the door with
cigarettes ablaze and tobacco smoke swirling around their heads, they'll go unrecognized and unnoticed until it's too late to do anything but run for cover and count the bodies.

That's, of course, unless the culprits are black. Then, of course, they'll be spotted immediately and told to either put the cigarettes out or vacate the premisis.

I was surrounded by them at a casino for taking photos.

Same thing for old white dudes like me.  I was once busted in a hospital for having an unlit cigarette in hand as I was walking out to the patio to light up... everyone knows that second-hand smoke is the secret terrorist weapon!
