I copied this from a comment my son left on FB.

"You can't "un-invent" the H-bomb, nor the nuke. Countries that we don't want to have them are manufacturing them, so the best solution is treaties and policy. If we want to remove nuclear weapons from the planet, and start with us, the U.S (the ones that want peace), would that be smart? I'm pretty sure countries like Iran would continue their nuclear programs, they don't care about us. Guns cannot be "un-invented" either: They exist and are here to stay. How is taking them away from people that are good, and that want to follow the law, going to stop the ones that don't care about our laws and firearm regulations from keeping theirs, or trafficking them from other countries? Yes, I do believe in sensible gun laws. EVERYONE should have a thorough background check before every firearm purchase, straw purchasing should be cracked down on, I'm on the fence with required registration because of all the firearms in circulation, and of course guns should be kept away from schools.

The next time people should realize is that assault rifles are banned. Assault rifles, technically speaking, fire fully automatic with a selector switch. YOU CANNOT BUY ONE! The only way you can purchase one is with a special permit that has a high tax and lots of stipulations; I think one of them is that the ATF (or FBI, not sure) as the right to inspect them and that they are safely kept at any time. The only reason you would really need theses is if you are a firearms manufacture or a collector. These "assault rifles" that the media is talking about are no more deadly than any other semi-auto rifle. They only want to ban them for cosmetic reasons, which seems pretty shallow to me, and just tells me how misinformed these people are. For example, under an "assault rifle" ban, pistol grips on these rifles would not be allowed. An easy way around that is the get a grip built into the stock of the rifle and you're all set. Low capacity magazines are pointless too, because anyone that knows how to operate a firearm can reload in just a few seconds. Present me with evidence that smaller magazines (NOT CLIPS) reduce gun violence instead of presumptions out of ignorance and fear, and I might actually look into it.

There may always be minor details I get wrong, so please correct me, but being a gun owner of rifles and pistols, who has shot them all at the range quite often (when I had time and money, college is making me broke  ), I definitely believe that the innocent firearm is not the problem here. We should probably start caring about people and helping them, instead of leaving them out in the world while we focus on things that aren't actually living such as guns."

Thank you for reading, I'll let him respond to comments :)

Some firearms are anything but innocent, they are designed specifically as weapons to more efficiently kill people.  Just as it is illegal to buy, own or sell a hand grenade or land mine, so it should be illegal to own those weapons designed to kill people.  The problem is that of the nearly 300 million firearms in the USA at least 200 million of them fall into this category of design criteria, which means that for any effective "gun control" legislation to work, the collection and involuntary confiscation of some legally owned firearms would be necessary.  The horse is way the hell and gone from the barn. There's no answer to this problem except to somehow intervene before the shooting begins.

Art, no he doesn't read my blog, he laughs and says, "you old people and your blogs" but I did get his permission before copying here. He's smart, very logical and level headed. He is my "easy one", still motherhood makes me a worrier.

Thanks SBA and SB.

JMac, vigilance is the only thing that may save us and the lives of potential targets.

If you want to stop people from dying from products that are currently legal to own, firearms would be way down on the list.  How about we put our limited time and money into something that we can change and quit worrying about things we can not?

He is a wise young man and indeed a deep thinker. As I concluded, finally, at my post, it would have been nice to have a common sense approach a couple decades ago. We do not need military hardware in the civilian population, but now the cat is out of the bag, so many weapons out there that no law will help keep guns out of the hands of assholes. It's a shame really.

Semi-auto rifles and handguns were only designed for one thing: Killing people, and doing it more efficiently. The M1 Garand and the 1911 Colt, for example, were developed for military use. No self-respecting hunter -- and I know hunters -- would use either, so there's no justification I can think of for them in civilian hands, except perhaps target-shooting. That I couldn't answer to. In any event, no one is seriously suggesting confiscation that I know of, merely tightening the controls on acquisition. Anything else is far too late.

Before you ask, I grew up around guns and respect them, even taught hunter safety courses away back in the Stone Age. And, as I said somewhere else recently, I spent so much time on (mostly) military ranges firing all kinds of ordnance that I have permanent hearing damage, particularly -- and unsurprisingly -- in my right ear. I've also stared down the muzzle of loaded weapons twice. It wasn't fun -- but no, I'm still not afraid of guns.

You are full of shit, dude.  Both my rifle and shotgun are semi-automatic/autoloaders.  I CHOSE them to be BECAUSE they were gas operated, semi-automatics.  The gas operation GREATLY reduces recoil.  My ass weighs only 114 lbs. and a bolt action .30-06 or 12 ga. shotgun would knock me on my butt.    Same goes for my daughters who both hunt.

To blatantly condemn an entire class of weapons, which DO serve a valuable purpose, just because you don't know your ass from a footstool is EXACTLY why I have no tolerance for the current gun confiscation hysteria.

Same goes for your claim that "no one is seriously suggesting confiscation".  Right in my own backyard I've got this idiot doing it. (and he's NOT alone and there are a BUNCH of people like him across this country).

So I say again, BULLSHIT!    I don't give a rat's ass how many "military ranges" you've fired down.  You're STILL wrong.
