when I'm in the studio I like to listen jazzradio.fr.  they play music I haven't heard in years like sammy davis jr who lately blows me away like crazy, plus music I've never heard before - like this one (below) by Paolo Conte.

As an aside, there's a cut they play sometimes of "Take Me to the River" not exactly the al green version - the singer is white - you know the type of stylist, she uses an anemic pleurisitic, young white girl gently coughing out a song, sound, only her style works so perfectly with the lyrics that have been added to it, it worked it's way into my brain.

And it happens to be the song that was the inspiration for a painting I just completed.  It's been playing in my head while I worked on it (without music - couldn't find the version - so I had to settle for my brain worm rememberances).  I'll show the painting here once I can find the song because I think it's as much a part of the painting as the work.  I wrote to them (in English) hoping they'll send me the name, assuming that like all civilized european countries, they speak english.

It’s Wonderful – Via Con Me

-Paolo Conte

lyrics with english translation

via via vieni via di qui
niente più ti lega a questi luoghi
neanche questi fiori azzurri
via via neanche questo tempo grigio
pieno di musiche
e di uomini che ti son piaciuti

away away come away from here
nothing binds you to this place anymore
not even these blue flowers
away away not even this grey weather
full of music
and of men that you liked

it’s wonderful it’s wonderful
it’s wonderful good luck my baby
it’s wonderful it’s wonderful
it’s wonderful I dream of you

via via vieni via con me
entra in questo amore buio
non perderti per niente al mondo
via via non perderti per niente al mondo
lo spettacolo d’arte varia
di uno innamorato di te

away away come away with me
enter into this dark love
don’t miss, for anything in the world,
the multimedia show
of someone in love with you

it’s wonderful it’s wonderful
it’s wonderful good luck my baby
it’s wonderful it’s wonderful
it’s wonderful I dream of you

Via, via, vieni via con me,
entra in questo amore buio,
pieno di uomini…
via, entra e fatti un bagno caldo,
c’è un accappatoio azzurro,
fuori piove un mondo freddo….

away away come away with me
enter into this dark love
full of men …
away, come in and have a hot bath
there’s a blue bathrobe,
outside a cold world is raining …

It’s wonderful, it’s wonderful, it’s wonderful,
good luck my baby,
it’s wonderful, its wonderful, it’s wonderful,
I dream of you….

I haven't heard anything like that

I've heard Euro cabaret similar but not nearly as beautifully done or slyly sexy. usually in foreign film.

Then I looked up the lyrics, then the translated lyrics and I fell in love.

There are perfectly produced pieces of music that belong in some kind of perfect music catalog and imo rbis is one of them.

Its like potato chips.

I can't believe you people aren't enchanted by this piece of music.

gah.

My speakers have gone wonky! but the lyrics here are wonderful  : )   And I love Take Me to the River.....

Will listen when at desktop at some point this weekend...

(Flu/heavy cold abounds over here. Husband's birthday yesterday and he spent it under covers.... right as I finally am getting over it.)

I like it a lot

i've listened to it more than once. It's so oddly flippant

oddly flippant.  precisely.  the lyrics are pure poetry.  I love that little song..it's a tiny perfection.

Anna, don't know if this is the al green "river" but I think it in fact is, and it's been added to.  I'm still waiting to get the name of the artist.  when I first heard it, I wanted to smack the DJ but then it grew on me, particularly ....well, i'll wait until I have the recording and then I can explain...

I actually listened and did enjoy the quirkiness.

Then I poked the <3 button. That took effort which I seldom use here anymore.

I generally avoid listening to posted you tubes so that was a leap for me.

This is a like a compliment.

And this is like a thank you. :D

Just listened again because I'm kind of in the thrall of it (again) and its a brain worm now anyway (and listening to a song thats brainworming is the best way to stop the incessant worming)... anyway I'm kinda very into that xylophone bridge towards the end where the upbeat behind joins in.

Just slays me, this piece of music.

I, on the other hand, am confused by the vibes bridge with those paired flutes. What I like about the bridge is how short it is. What I love about the song is how incredibly straightforward the rhythm is, that almost monotonous piano rhythm with that very spare drum shuffle, and that spareness is left alone. And I love the changes in the chorus, because the initial implication is that the changes are going to be as musically predictable as the rest of the song, but then the second change goes somewhere completely unexpected, then it resolves to a third change that you wonder how is going home but, bizarrely, is home - the original key. It just stays put, shifts back to minor and you’re at Chips Chips.

And it’s so simply declarative, so speechlike, no rhythm, no rhyme, just essentially speech. And that deadpan delivery: Edith Piaf meets Tom Waites.
