I have discovered over the years that if you watch animals enough you will find that we share many common traits with our four-legged friends. Nowhere is this more evident than in morning rituals.

Just like her human companions, Miss Snickers, the mini-pig, has her own special rituals she performs each and every morning. She begins her morning early, usually around six-thirty or so, when Mel or myself lets her out of her crate where she spends the night. We let her out, then open the front door and let her outside.

Of course, like most of us humans, the first thing on her list is a stop in her own personal “bathroom area” to do her business. After she has relieved herself she then enjoys a morning walk around the farm.

She follows us out to the barn and waits patiently while we open the chicken coop and turn the chickens out for the day. Snickers loves this because it means she now has her very own feathered friends to play “chase”  with.  Unfortunately the chickens don’t seem to share Snicker’s enthusiasm for her game and don’t really appreciate being chased about the yard by a playful porcine.

Outraged clucking, scattered feathers, and one belligerent rooster later and Miss Snickers is a happy pig. With the chickens put firmly in their place, she stops at her private pool for a quick dip and after a few minutes splashing in the cold water she is ready for the last stop of her morning rounds.

I always find her at her last visiting place…Billy’s pasture. It is always the same, she is standing at his gate and Billy our big Quarterhorse Stallion is standing on the other side, his head lowered as he and Miss Snickers touch noses gently through the bars of the gate.

They always stand like that a few minutes, as if they are exchanging greetings…maybe a little small talk. I call to her gently and the spell is broken. She wheels around and comes trotting to me and follows me into the house. It is, of course, time for the most important ritual of animal and human alike….Breakfast.

After breakfast Miss Snickers enjoys the best part of her day. She curls up next to my chair as I write blogs about life on the farm and the  animals I love.
