Mike Pence and His Poor, Impaired Prefrontal Cortex

Mike Pence pointing

I KNEW IT!!!!!

The fucking homophobic, fundie asshole (and every fundie asshole like him) is brain damaged!

Here is scientific PROOF!

Biological and cognitive underpinnings of religious fundamentalism

"Beliefs profoundly affect people's lives, but their cognitive and neural pathways are poorly understood. Although previous research has identified the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) as critical to representing religious beliefs, the means by which vmPFC enables religious belief is uncertain. We hypothesized that the vmPFC represents diverse religious beliefs and that a vmPFC lesion would be associated with religious fundamentalism, or the narrowing of religious beliefs."

TOLD YA!   That quote is straight out of Neuropsychologia, a peer reviewed, international journal  covering behavioral and cognitive neuroscience!

As discussed on the site Raw Story,

"These findings are important because they suggest that impaired functioning in the prefrontal cortex—whether from brain trauma, a psychological disorder, a drug or alcohol addiction, or simply a particular genetic profile—can make an individual susceptible to religious fundamentalism."

So if you ever wondered of fundie fuckwads like Pence were mentally impaired shits who are crazy as freaking bed bug in a crack house, the answer is now a scientifically proven and resounding...

BTW, I'm betting the same results apply to "true believers" supporters of Trump ("Hi" Doc!), Hillary ("Hi" Robert!) and Israel ("Hi", KS!)!

The only potential downside of the research is that it, if/when it becomes a standard, consensus explanation for fundamentalist thought, it will certainly be used by scoundrels (and organisations of scoundrels) to mitigate/excuse horrid behavior on the basis of a mental disability.

As to supporters for, I don’t know, unqualified dogcatchers for President? (Hi Amy)

You'd likely lose:

Based on what, Ron?  MLK's support of white people murdering and oppressing people of color (which includes Palestinians)?  Or maybe you we referring to he thoughts on apartheid?

BTW, I don't consider, nor do most people with any common sense I think, MLK to be a fundie "true believer" like I'm referring to...  it is kind of amusing that you are associating his supporters to those that support Pence and Trump , however.

Ahhhh, KB...  you once again are (purposefully???) confusing people who have political convictions different than yours with people who fanatically commit things like war crimes, ethnic cleansing, oppression and fire bombing babies to death due to their "tribes" beliefs.  How "cute"...

There are atrocities all over the world on a daily basis including far worse ones in neighboring Syria and the one that you think is more worthy of attention than any other involves a woman who played chicken with a bulldozer fifteen years ago. You think this is worse than, to use a mild example, a political opponent of Putin being shot to death on a Moscow street over a difference of opinion.

Your calling me out personally in a post, particularly while making a point with questionable accuracy, doesn’t qualify as having a different political conviction than I do. I respect different political convictions; in fact, I talk about (and to) people with different political convictions with WAY more respect than you do.

@Amy;  No, my reference is to MLK alone and his beliefs...

I would categorize him as a person of true faith but not as some kind of obsessed wingnut...

If your "fundie" is the kind of revival tent, prayer meetin', ritualistic nit wit who has absolutely no sense of biblical symbolism, King isn't there....

Put King with Ghandi or even Mother Theresa, but never with the Bible thumping holy rollers...

J. Wolfman has it correct.

I'll admit I won't take time to read the article, because I object to a "finding" which "proves" humans cannot think their way out of being such bigots. It forgives them before the sin. See the connection?

The question becomes what one does with pathology information. If true, this information does not relieve people of individual responsibility or collective responsibility (to commit resources to dealing with pathology).

This is sort of a mirror image of a typical liberal political argument about poor populations that commit a lot of crimes. We set up conditions, we limit access to wealth by traditional channels, then we complain about what we’ve incentivized. So it’s the fault of whoever set up a system that funnels people into a result like this. However, people personally choose to commit crimes, including violent crimes, people know violent crimes are wrong, and so this is a question of individual responsibility, which is why people who commit crimes in poor neighborhoods are still eligible for prison. Well, which is it? Both. Same deal with pathology. Excuses are great for probabilities but terrible for individual moral choices.

AKA and I may sound like 'alts' at times, but I o think, in this case, we have it right...the downside to this research is the very real potential for social and legal forgiveness for, say, the abettors to the killing at Charlottesville, and for the killer himself.
