That title translates (from Italian), "Better dead than lesbian"

That is a phrase I heard more than once in my youth.

Many here know my history (and that I am 100% Sicilian), but to the one's who don't let me share that, after my parents were killed, I ended up living with my uncle and aunt.

While there I told my aunt that I liked girls "that way"

Shortly after disclosing that, my uncle began to beat and rape me "out of being a lesbian".  I eventually managed to run away and got him arrested and imprisoned.  (they never did prosecute my aunt).

I just read this and had a major flashback.

Italian lesbian reveals years of corrective rape by father

"A 23-year-old Italian woman has spoken out about the years of sexual assault she suffered at the hands of her father, who attempted to “correct” her sexuality.

Francesca, who is a lesbian, told the newspaper La Repubblica the abuse began when she was 15.

Her sister had read a series of text messages between Francesca and her friends, in which she had discussed her  feelings about other girls. The sister then showed the messages to their father.

The family later picked Francesca up from school and attacked her on the way home.

“And while we were in the car, they beat me in the head, in the legs, they beat me everywhere,” she said.

She recalled being locked in her room with her father, who began to undress, saying: “You must look at these things, not the women” before raping her as a punishment.

“I was now at a crossroads, life or death. And I chose to live and denounce my parents.”

— Francesca

Francesca suffered years of “corrective rape” and beatings, with her mother once telling her: “Better a dead daughter than a lesbian.”

“I attempted suicide three times, but after yet another sexual abuse I escaped,” she said.

“I was now at a crossroads, life or death. And I chose to live and denounce my parents.”

“It was not easy, but I had many beautiful people beside me who helped me overcome difficult times.”

(follow the "La Republica" link if you want to read it in Italian.)

I "only" had to endure a few weeks of what she endured for years (which explains her three suicide attempts) and I'm amazed at her strength.

What isn't amazing is that this happened to her in Palermo, Sicily.

I have many relatives who still live just outside of Palermo.  I bet if they checked around someone would know Francesca's family.

I don't know... maybe it's a Sicilian thing to beat and "rape the lesbian out of" your daughter or niece...

maybe it's a "macho" man thing...

Whatever it is, reading about someone else having it happen too... hurt...  and I am trying really hard to deal with the scared little girl who is cowering inside of me right now.

This just hit too close to home.

It's the stories that "hit too close to home" that remind us of why we fight and what we're fighting for and against...As if we need reminding....

It's not a macho thing, it's a just because you can take advantage of someone does not mean you should thing.

As an aside, your uncle and AUNT were two pieces of shit. If I had a niece who came to stay with us and she mentioned she was a lesbian and I decided to "rape the lesbian out of her", my wife would not have contacted law enforcement, she would have immediately killed me.....that is absolutely no exaggeration...the cops would find no identifiable remains left. Hitler must have been correct after visiting Italy and observing that the current inhabitants were not the same people as the ancient Romans. Although, the ancients were a pretty perverted group as well.
