I will not carry heat. Ever. I do not want a loaded gun on my hip, concealed .. or displayed for all to see and fear. Nope, not me. Not in my car, not in my boat, not in my pants.

My neighbor went to see Star Wars yesterday with his son. His son has a heater, and a conceal and carry permit (not a privilege, no .. a RIGHT), and fully intended to carry it into the theater. For self-defense dontchaknow. I asked "self-defense from who?" Now, I expected to hear an answer, something like "defense from some psychopath like the one that shot up the theater in Colorado," that unhinged red-headed domestic terrorist stepchild that put the fear of theaters into us all a couple years ago.

But .. NO .. why does his son feel a need to pack at the movies?

So ... the propaganda machine is well oiled, deployed, and fully functional. Very predictably and quite disheartening to me, we here in the hardcore heartland of America are actually in fear for our lives, from Islamic loose cannons (eyeroll) OR maybe it's just that the idea of walking about in public carrying death machines on our hips appeals to our inner American cowboy. I truly hope the latter, although barely less ridiculous.

We are, collectively, that freaking simple, that easily manipulated.

My neighbor's son seems of average or better intelligence, attends college, has two cats, a nice SUV, fine wardrobe of designer brands, girlfriend .. and a pistol. Not pointing fingers at him particularly. Based on what I see around me, this kid is not an anomaly; he fairly represents our average collective mindset. Sadly, all it takes is some hate speech from a charismatic clown like Donald Trump to send us all into war mode. We are being groomed, for lack of a better term, for yet another ground war, and Trump is good for business. Yes, the kind of war business that allows the Halliburtons, Lockheed Martins, Raytheons etc. etc. etc. .. to bill US WHO PAY TAXES (average people, not corporations) endlessly, a get stay rich free card for eternity billed carte blanche at the expense of, well, everything else. The stuff we actually DO need, we don't get, because you know, to actually expect these things would cut the war budget .. and make us (for shame) UNPATRIOTIC. That's the short narrative.

Now, nevermind that sending yet another bunch of teenagers to the sandy regions to kill and be killed will have the opposite effect of what us average patriots expect. We are given the impression that ISIS, ISIL, DAESH, AL QAEDA, BOKO BLAH BLAH et al, can be blown to bits, or killed one good patriot bullet at a time, until which time there are none left and we can go back to our cherry pie and baseball 'merikan existence. Yes, the war machine, the wizard behind the curtain pulling our puppet strings would have us believe that, knowing full well in their black and evil Grinch hearts, that for every "insurgent" we kill, five or fifty more are created. I dare ask, what would WE do, if our land was occupied?

Takes a terrorist to know a terrorist I say, and the USA/UK/Israel knows terrorism. We are the very best.

Bottom line for me, I repeat, is that I refuse to live in propaganda fueled fear. I simply cannot imagine strapping on a hogleg every time I go out in the scary world to grab some groceries, or go to a movie. In fact though, come to think of it, I believe I will avoid Star Wars, and all other movies. Knowing that any half-bright (or even full bright) media 'noided trigger-happy cracker can carry their lead launchers in there kind of kills it for me.

The vast majority of communities in America will never know terrorism, even if we bring in Syrian refugees in six figures. Terrorism if it happens way more than now will not kill a tiny, tiny fraction of people killed in gun accidents in the US. That's all terrorism, not just Muslim terrorism.

In terms of the message being managed, I learned a little more about that from Amy. She was trying to tell Doc Vega something (I know, as we say in Yiddish, Ich red tsu der vant, which translated loosely means "I might as well talk to the wall") but I happened to look at the link she left on his thread and was so surprised I just posted about it.

It seems about a week ago, there was an enormous Sunni conference in South Asia (India in this case), which is where most of the world's Muslims are, not in the Middle East. The result was a group of nearly 70,000 Muslim clerics issuing a joint fatwa condemning the main nominally Muslim terrorist groups, including ISIS, Al Qaida, and even the Taliban. That's in addition to the roughly one and a half million people at the conference who signed a document condemning terrorism. Do you think just maybe we should have heard about that before 40% plus of Trump's supporters decide all Muslims deserve to be kept out of the United States?

If we knew that, maybe our fear of terrorism might drop a notch or at least maybe we wouldn't attribute it to all of Islam at the drop of a hat.

WTF??? Carrying a gun either in the open or concealed will get your butt tossed out of any bar, movie theater, concert venue or amusement park anywhere in California.  The criteria is simple, if you're that paranoid, we don't need or want your money.  No shirt, no shoes, no service.

30 percent of republicans want to bomb Agrabah Kosher (fictional Arab city from a Disney movie). We are, collectively, education averse.

As to the guns, at this point they will never "go away" .. there's enough hardware out there in 'merika to last several generations, even if not a single new piece was made. A certain amount of us, therefore, will die from domestic gun violence, many by accident, for the foreseeable future. I've accepted that, but refuse to participate, even in SELF-DEFENSE (ooooh)

Your neighbor's son is a freaking idiot who is making excuses for carrying the latest version of a phallic symbol.

Did you know that the chances of a person being attacked by a terrorist are roughly 1 in 20 million?  Did you know that the odds of you being killed by your television falling on you and killing you is greater that being killed by a terrorist??? (that is a fact, btw)

Now compare that to the chances of  you drowning in a bathtub (1 in 800,000) or being struck by lightning (1 in 5,500,000).  Your neighbor's kid would be better served by spending the rest of his life smelling bad with a lightning rod strapped to his ass than packing "heat" to protect himself from ISIL.

Last bastion of sanity JMac? Could be. Notsomuch around here.

Amy, yeah I know the stats, and agree. Unfortunately those are not valid to the unreachable unthinkers.

that's the big fantasy isn't it, being the hero at the mall. I suppose it could happen. What's funny though (odd not haha) is that there are so many mass shootings, but so few of the hero stories. Like at the CC in Oregon .. first thing out of Ted Nugent's mouth was about it being a pussy gun free zone there. Then we find out Oregon allowed conceal and carry at college, and there WAS students packing. One was a recent VET, uninjured, miraculously .. said you have to consider that when you unholster and start blasting there's a good chance the cops will pull up, a second too late to see that you're the good guy, then engage you in a firefight .. so he didn't pull his.

As to how would I feel if you're imaginary narrative came true, at their funerals? I'd feel sad

Fast forward to "when". There's the problem. "When" is extremely, extremely rare. We've got fifty states. We've got thousands of movie theaters in many of those states. Why is a terrorist going to pick yours?

You know what generally happened to the overwhelming, overwhelming majority of airline passengers on 9/11/01, all over the world? Thousands upon thousands upon thousands of them?

They landed safely.

So, Philosophus, why wouldn't you be safer smelling bad and strapping a lightning rod to your ass than packing heat? Assuming Amy's statistics are right, and from everything I've heard they are, wouldn't it be more logical to take her advice?

Trig, I completely concur with your post. The State of Washington is an open-carry state (with lots of restrictions on that, thank goodness) and full of folks who want to make concealed-carry legal as well. I shudder to think of the ramifications.

@Monkey, being a New Yorker for the first 53 years of my life, I know exactly what you mean in your description of the donald. He has always been omnipresent and easy to disregard or ignore, but now he is dangerous. More shuddering.

Bernie has other problems. The DNC is scheduling debates at times when people don't watch because that improves Hillary's chances.

This was well said. Maybe it says something about the reality there.
