You can always expect the worst from the Trump administration, and they will never disappoint you.  Racist immigration policy? Check! Build another aircraft carrier for no good reason? Check! Most corrupt, kleptocratic administration in history? Check! We could go through maybe 500 more examples, but we have to cut to the chase. The latest Trump policy proposal that has made my blood boil more than any other thing is the news that Donald Trump is proposing to defund Meals on Wheels.

WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE WOULD DO ANYTHING LIKE THIS???  Al Queda and the Taliban would take a more humane approach towards the elders under their control than this administration.  Maybe Saddam Hussein would decide to kill a random 100 people just for fun, but I never heard of him doing this.  Is there any villain in the movies that you know who would be that gratuitously cruel?  Please let me know.

Believe it or not, there are apologists for the Trump administration who actually justify this Trumpian behavior.  F*x News reported that the cuts proposed actually exist in the Department of Housing & Urban Development's Community Development Block Grant program (another outrage in and of itself, but I digress).  Supposedly, only $248,347 of the CDBG program is allocated towards Meals on Wheels, while the vast majority of money to feed elderly shut ins comes from charities and other non-federal sources.

The Kaiser Foundation says that the annual cost of feeding a senior for one year is $2500. Dividing that into the proposed cuts in the HUD budget, that would mean that only 100 seniors would die from this Meals on Wheels cut. Now ignore for a moment that this federal money is a match for other monies that would be eliminated, thus creating a multiplier effect that would kill a lot more people than just the money from the Feds. Many grants for Meals on Wheels have stipulations that private foundations will give $3 for every $1 of federal assistance. The Kaiser Foundation says that the annual cost of feeding a senior for a year is $2500.  So OMB Mulvaney's proposal to kill Meals on Wheels will only kill one hundred people under the most minimal assumptions, but the actual number losing because of the Trump budget will in fact be much, much more

Without spending that $2500 on Meals on Wheels means that senior would have to be placed in much more intensive, costly situations. The cost of institutionalizing seniors is roughly $60,000 a year.  So the policy subgenii in the White House are blind if they think that this miniscule cut in federal funding represents wise fiscal discipline. Does the phrase "Penny wise, pound foolish" come to your mind? Perhaps as Donald Trump would say, the only response is SMART!

Alexandra Mafri wrote a satirical piece in the Washington Post entitled "Trump's budget makes perfect sense and will fix America and I will tell you why." It's worth quoting to give us some inkling of WTF the Trumpies are doing and what kind of logical processes they are using to justify the madness that they are proposing.

Some people are complaining that the budget profered by the Trump administration, despite its wonderful macho-sounding name is too vague and makes all sorts of cuts to needed programs in favor of increasing military spending by leaps and bounds. Those people are wimps. OMB Director Mike Mulvaney has called is a "hard power budget," which is, I think the name of an exercise program where you eat only what you can catch, pump up your guns, and then punch the impoverished in the face.

The Meals on Wheels outrage cuts to the heart of this administration's stupidity, cruelty, hatred, and sadism. It's also a demonstration of  just how little our national leader's knowledge of government administration really is.  The Trumpsters have fallen for one of the oldest administrative tricks in the books.  Of course, it really helped the bureaucrats in that Steve Bannon et. al. have decided to "destroy the administrative state" by not filling thousands of mid-level appointees who could actually implement Trumpian goals with less negative feedback and better results.

Now we all know that Ben Carson is a pretty dim bulb, and like other Cabinet members he's been forced to deal with senior permanent bureaucratic staff to make policy recommendations. It's a fair guess to assume that 99% of the bureaucrats in HUD pretty much hate Trump's guts. And what 'crats do in situations like this is to propose "killing the puppies" in the total range of programs that could be axed by austerity cuts.  Imagine that the Mayor of San Francisco is new, and he's looking for some ways to reduce government spending.  Were he to inquire to the wrong department, it might recommend doing away with the cable cars to achieve budgetary efficiency.  You get my drift.

The higher level civil servants in HUD have hit a grand slam home run.  It's impossible to imagine the outrage that will occur to every Tea Partier in every Congressional district when they figure out that Donald Trump is trying to kill Grandma by taking away her food. This proposal virtually guarantees that Trump's budget request will be dead on arrival, just like the fate awaiting Trumpcare. More likely than not, the Meals on Wheels flap will be part of a cascade effect that will doom the Orange Wonder's proposals for tax reform, the Wall, and infrastructure.

All of this will just make things easier for Congress to initiate impeachment proceedings against him. Mark my words.  This is coming sooner, rather than later.

this is about mr king of negotiators setting up how desperados do during negotiations because you know how badass he likes to portray himself - holding someone's grandmother at the window and threatening to shoot her brains out.  then dangling babies and little kids off a roof.  that's how he's setting this up, so there's some disgusting mean for his side to "give in" to, when they're trying to come to a compromise.

he's disgusting.  I hope he dies.

No argument from me except that no one in Congress has the balls to impeach the Beast 45 and over half of them are his minions.  Things might change if they lose big in 2018.

impeachment hardly does it; everyone associated w this must somehow go

I kind of noticed about 5 decades ago, actually even earlier come to think of it, that every Right Wing Authoritarian I met in whichever situation and whatever position in society was clear they simply did not care about other people. Hard stop.

There's been a lot of talk of Nixon lately, how ironically sad he remains the best thing so far to happen in Republican health care policy.

Patience. Patience. Patience! My Trumpistas here are armed and dangerous.

Here we are with these people in control of both houses of Congress and the Presidency. I am a big believer in the old warning, “Be careful what you wish for.” These people, particularly HE WHO SHALL NOT BE NAMED IN MY COMMENT, have jacked up my people’s expectations to the point that it is impossible that those expectations can be met. Let us let them all stew in their own juices for a while.

There is a political pendulum that I have watched swing for a long lifetime now. When mom stops getting her Meals on Wheels, the pendulum will swing back. Trust me on this. We have already seen a recent poll done by Fox indicating that Bernie Sanders is by far the most popular politician in the United States of these Americas. It won’t take long.

truthfully brass, that's been my take - that the more depraved and disgusting the right becomes, the closer we get to gaining some ground.  my concern is that we're (and i keep saying we're although I'm not a dem anymore), so they're not doing much in the way of being the sort of party anyone finds comfort and kinship in.  they've become a lighter version of the right and that's unacceptable.

if we're to WIN then the win will come when the left most party embraces the bernies, not because it's the only way to weasel their oil can harry selves back into office.  because if they do that, it will not be pretty and we/they will lose again in '20.

Good, FM Station. That is the Susan Sarandon view of it all, and a valid view in my estimation.

And by the way, we do not wish death on anyone. We wish that the dumb sons-a-bitches come to their senses . . . with the exception of Steve Bannon who does not need our help. Photos indicate that he is drinking himself to death without our help.

Ordinarily I would agree with you on matters of longevity and wishful thinking. I will take this opportunity to reassure you I don't wish anything untoward or vicious or violent towards him.  not at all.

The problem for me is he will not learn, he will not grow, all this posturing and demanding attention and having tantrums appears to be about strategies and arcane rules to a game he's invented that he must win at all costs even if it destroys our government and hurts and even kills human beings.

So my simple human wish is that nature takes its course. Soon.

This reminds me of an old buddy of mine who'd always looked forward to his delivered meal. We often chatted about the weather and sports there on his sun side porch and you could see the hungry, whimsical gratitude in his eyes when his midday food arrived. One of thousands of MOW beneficiaries, I'm sure.  He was a Korean War Veteran, self-sufficient, battling Lou Gehrig's. That government meal did a lot for him, ONL, thank you for writing.

Bernie's star is rising in part because the country is learning what really happens when Republicans can do what they want.
