Many market studies show that teens can exert a great deal of influence on parental purchase decisions at the malls.
So here's the question: Can these kids exert influence on parental voting decisions at the polls?
Yes, particularly if their parents are less informed on an issue than they are
Some people look at things differently when the problem is not in the abstract. A gun rights advocate might have a change of heart thinking about their child being killed.
I suspect few hardened single-issue voters will be influenced by their children. Indeed, I suspect influence works for the most part in the other direction. For instance, racist kids tend to have racist parents.
When it comes to gun control, emotions like fear control the debate, and the only "logic" diehards apply is the "slippery-slope" argument. If you're paranoid and fearful enough to believe the government is coming to get you, you are not going to give up your gun or support ANY legislation, regardless of how many children die to support your irrational belief.
I had suspected, based on the misty-eyed look people like Michelle Bachmann get when talking about the "Founding Fathers" that the constitution is regarded as a piece of Holy Scripture by Evangelicals. Now based on the "God gave us the Constitution, ergo God gave us the Second Amendment and the right, as Americans, to own guns", LaPierre argument I know we are committing blasphemy when we talk about banning any type of firearm.
I suspect that Tom is right.
