My ancient central A/C unit finally puked and was no longer worth me pullin apart and fixin again.A friend who owns a closed businees had a brand new a/c unit on the second story roof and if get it down i could have it free.So me and my daughter gathered up my chains,rope,come-along,etc,and went up on the roof. After wasting an hour or so trying to find something that would take the weight to hook up to,with no luck,i lost patience.I'm still,at 69, a pretty strong dude,so i said for her to go back inside, well outa the way,an i'll just lower it to the floor on a rope.I wrapped a strap around the unit and tied the rope to it and(here's the brainy part)wrapped the rope round my hand.Lifted the unit onto the edge of the trapdoor opening and balanced there.Letting go with my left hand to get a 2 handed grip on the rope, the unit tipped and fell thru, dropping ten feet and stopping 6 inches off the floor.Stopped by my hand, with the coiled rope which had just whipped thru my hand and coiling ever tighter, jammed against trap's metal frame and the meat of 3 fingers slowly peeling off. While my daughter yelled below "good job dad, it stopped before hittin the floor" i was watchin my fingers coming off.I reached down with my left hand and grabbed the rope and pulled hard enuff to get a half inch of slack and yanked the mangled mess outa the rope.Four hours in the ER and they did a pretty good job of re-assembling me.The moral of the story, like i always told my kids...."Just cause i'm older than you,it dont mean i'm any smarter"

Well...$500 per finger doesn't seem like a good deal to me but that's because I've had two off and sewn back on. I'd gladly pay a grand to go back and get a do-over.

Yikes, Steel!!!! Nice of your neighbor to offer the unit - but Yikes! Hope you recover well and soon : )

(Still wearing sweaters and coats, here.... but since it tends to go straight to 90 degrees or higher when it does warm up, there's no complaints here on the cold. Except, maybe, that it's too cold to plant tomatoes, so far...)

As a piano player you're giving me nightmares. Shit, as a blogger who types..,

How you feeling?

"I'm still,at 69, a pretty strong dude..."

You might want to reconsider this self -assessment or self-evaluation...

Given the fact that you saved $1500.00 in purchase price of a new A/C, you might have done well to pay a couple of young people 50 bucks each to move the unit for you.

Net savings:

$1400.00 and three fingers worth of pain and suffering and a visit to the emergency room.

Like Kosh, I'm a pianist and at 70 my fingers are among the few things that work for me as  they're supposed to work...I'd hate to think of putting myself in your current position...

I fully intend to be seated at the piano and playing during my own wake....

Hope you mend quickly and well.
