Grace Slick and a Chick-Fil-A commercial during the Grammies

Chick-Fil-A, an extremely conservative anti-gay marriage company, ran an ad during the Grammies. It consisted of cows handing out VR headsets and people reacting with obvious delight to whatever the video is, then a note to go to their website to view it.

Maybe one of you can find the ad. It may prove difficult as it’s been pulled, even from YouTube. The video it links to on the Chick-Fil-A website has also been pulled.

It has to do with the music from the ad, which is “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now,” a Jefferson Starship song, to which Grace Slick apparently owns the rights. As you might imagine given her history, Slick is not exactly a Christian conservative. When Chick-Fil-A approached her about using the song, her initial reaction was “Fuck No” until she thought about it, at which point she said “Fuck Yes.”

Why would she do such a thing?

Because she figured out  that they’d just use someone else’s song, and this way she’d be able to combat their cause.

This is an issue that those of us who grew up in the movement have really struggled with. Grace Slick was/is more than just a rock star, I mentioned to one of you the other day I was in SF in 67. At that time, you could actually cruise by her house next to the park and maybe even be invited in to party. The Starship is one thing, The Airplane was part of a movement that rejected consumerism on every level, and succeeded, sort of like the short time after the Russian Revolution, for a very short "Golden Time" which actually ended, not started, with The Summer of Love, and was snuffed out completely with the murder at Altamont. But, when we were all at the Be-In together in the park, the idea ANY of those songs would be used by a homophobic group that makes a mockery of Christ was beyond belief, and many of still cringe anytime we hear one of the "Anthems" of an actual Revolution that changed the world used in advertising today, marketing to Millineals who don't know the difference, but more specifically to the Boomer's who were then Wannabees and who wish they had been there but stayed home at the time, chickenshits (like the chains "food") listening instead on 33s.

Grace is still going strong, she is now a visual artist and has an amazing store in the waterfront Mecca of Sausalito, just over the hill from where we surf at Rodeo Beach. Still the Real Deal, it surprises me not she is donating the $.

I understand the author is a big Hendrix fan, can you imagine Bold as Love in an ad?:

Anger, he smiles,
Towering in shiny metallic purple armour
Queen Jealousy, envy waits behind him
Her fiery green gown sneers at the grassy ground

Auwe (Alas)

Hot kilowatt dam Maui!
eye knew we crossed paths somewhere--that was me in the Mexican white cotton over the hip loose parka with the orange mushrooms left and right--walkin' in the rays of a beautiful sun

Sure, but it’s just basically a news report

J.P.- that was me running and zig-zagging to get right underneath Owsley as he "dropped" tabs from his parachute and then landed in the Polo Grounds ... yep, snagged a few and, as was the times, shared them with other barefoot freaks.

BTW, Grace in her prime was HOT STUFF, like I said, the Real Deal ...

One pill makes you larger, and one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you, don't do anything at all
