Gordon Downie, front man for the seminal group The Tragically Hip, finally died of the brain cancer that was afflicting him. It was not before he led one final triumphant tour with the Hip and led the way for the rest of the country to come to terms with our treatment of indigenous peoples.

"The place of honor that Mr. Downie occupies in Canada’s national imagination has no parallel in the United States. Imagine Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Michael Stipe combined into one sensitive, oblique poet-philosopher, and you’re getting close."
                                                                                  --New York Times obituary.

Sorry, World. Canada is closed today due to a death in the family.

Thanks for putting that up, Amy. I should have thought of it myself. An homage to Ontario's cottage country and proof of how good he and the Hip were.

Thanks, Art, for stopping by. It's appreciated.

Hi, MC. Yes to all of that. (Where have you been?)

Thanks again, Art.

And also to you, Steel, for the rate.

Downie was a one-off, FM. He made no secret that he was dying of brain cancer, instead using it as a spring-board for a number of noble causes, such as the aforementioned reaching out to First Nations. His foundation has already raised more than $1.5 million for cancer research. Oh yeah -- and the music was pretty damned good, too.
