Geography Trivia question, possibly easy

Without looking at a map:

This evening, I was in four states within forty-five minutes, driving in a straight line. I'm in the fourth at the moment. I am not Southbound.

Where am I?

Either Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania or Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New York.....? not sure about 45 minutes.....

NY, Vermont, NH, Maine?

...or NY, CT, RI, MA ?

Still not sure about 45 minutes, regardless, driving at 2am?

Take a long time out here to hit four states in a row....

No combination right so far.
NC's guess works on time but I don't think in a straight line. From DE you can go to PA or NJ but in different directions.

Hey, I've gone through both PA and DE on my way to NJ.

Forgot about the straight line, though.

Anna's looked the most plausible to me.  But since it's wrong, judging by a map a crow could do it from the corner of NE Texas through Oklahoma, clipping a bit of Kansas and then on to Colorado.  Why a crow would want to do that is another matter.

This has been a really interesting exercise in seeing how peoples' minds work.

I'll start by saying that no one has yet found the route.

I'll continue by saying that not one person has attempted directly to answer my actual question. However, I think I would have done the same thing, because the interesting question is the route, not the destination. By the way, I am no longer in the state where I was when I wrote this, as this was a part of the trip, containing neither the state where I started nor the state where I am now. When I wrote this, I was neither angry nor euphoric. I was in a Cracker Barrel, stopping for dinner.

I wasn't driving at 2 AM, so that couldn't be the answer. That route would take about three hours. I know because I've driven it multiple times, as my son used to go to camp on Martha's Vineyard (great cerebral palsy camp there where I had an unexpected connection) and that's how I had to get there except for the couple of times we flew.

I looked at a map to check possibilities. Nerd cred's route doesn't take much of a detour. The trick there is one skinny state on the route - 10 minutes in Delaware - followed by two states close together basically parallel to either route, so that Pennsylvania and New Jersey are side by side.

The reason I specified a straight line is because there are places in the country where four states meet and I suppose it could be driven in a circle.

Dandy Lion's theory is intriguing, but the roads don't seem to do that and I'm not sure the distances as the crow flies are quite short enough. What's cool about the Oklahoma panhandle is you can draw a straight line that takes you through five states in not an enormous amount of distance because the Colorado/Kansas line is East of the New Mexico/Texas line. However, in any case, I'm not sure you can drive across the panhandle itself in 45 minutes. I don't know Western distances. And the highways don't appear to follow the necessary routes for a four state solution, let alone a five.

The trick is to find somewhere where two states are really skinny.

VT & NH are contiguous and skinny.
